Tidbit about LotR going mainstream
Now, I don't know if you play golf or not (invented by Hobbits you know, King Golfimbul and all that), but today I was watching a golf tournament when one of the players (Aaron Baddeley if you need to know) hit his shot deep into the woods and overgrowth. So the announcer said "Well, he's hit it into Lord of the Rings country down there." It blew me away - if that isn't mainstream I don't know what is!
tp

I don't know what surprises me more Sam, the fact that the announcer said that, or the fact that you watch golf, or more importantly, the fact that you forgot to trim my hedges on bagshot row this morning . But really, that is pretty amazing. I would have never thought someone in a sport like golf would have said that. PJ sure got Middle-earth some attention.

Hit it into Lord of the Rings country? What does that even mean?!
All commentators say stupid things, but that really takes the cake (oh, no - that sounded stupid, I might have a career!). Sounds like that particular golf commentator was desperately trying to bring some pop culture into the game... or he was watching one of the movies to keep himself awake?

OK, guys, if nobody watched it, it wouldn’t be on television. I guess you have to be an avid golfer to understand. Anyway, what are you supposed to do on stormy Saturday afternoons?
[ April 25, 2003: Message edited by: Bill Ferny ]

quote:
or he was watching one of the movies to keep himself awake?

Well, that's a fine how-do-ya-do. Don't suppose you have much knowledge of the game then, do ya? Oh well, I took a shot at trying to post it. My life is entwined with this game, I used to be a professional instructor. The announcer wasn't trying to do anything but illustrate the situation in an irreverent way. His ball was in the rough woods and thorny overgrowth far from the pleasant short grass of the fairway, that's all.

Don't let it get to you, Tar. Golf's a fine game (though it certainly isn't for me). I would have given the announcer kudos for mentioning LOTR. At least he has some idea of what the movies (or books) are about.
