Valar: Higher order Maiar, spirits like the Maia
The Valar and the Maiar are both groups of Ainur, which are Angels. There are also Umaiar, which are evil Maiar (anti-Maia or ex-maia). There are also creatures that defy clasification. Tom Bombadil and Ungoliant (sp) for example, they may be Ainur, or just something, powers-that-be sort of thing. Along the same lines there are Eagles and Hounds, talking beings which are sometimes stated or suggested to be Maiar, sometimes not.

Wargs, ophilants (like elephants), and dragons count, do they not? Or are they something else or considered animals?

Wargs and Dragons are intelligent creatures, so I'm assuming they would be considered races.

dragons would be counted possibly amongst the races, but not oliphaunts or wargs as they are basicly just animals and not of a higher order like man or elves.
Thx for telling me otherwise i wouldn't have checked Yeah it was pretty stupid

There are alot but I will try and name them all for you.
----------------------------------------- Ungoliant and the balrogs are also Maia There is: Eru- Illùvatar- The ONE Ainur- the Holy ones. Valar- the Powers.(protectors of MiddleEarth) | | Lords Valier- Queens IN due order -------------------------- Manwë Varda Ulmo Yavanna Aulë Nienna Oromë Estë Mandos Vairë Lórien Vána Tulkas Nessa *Melkor is no longer counted among the Valar --------------------------------------------- The Maiar- the same order of the Valar but a lesser degree. They are servants and helpers. I will not get into names here it is too much. But among them are : The Istari- Wizards Sauruman Gandalf Pollando Radagast Aiwendil Alatar Also The Valaraukar(balrogs), the sun and moon, Ungloiant and Sauron are all Maiar -------------------------------------------- Elves Men Dwarves Hobbits Beornings- shape shifters Eagles Wolves olvar ( growing things with roots in the earth) kelvar ( animals and all living things that move) Tom Bombadil and his wife Mearas Oliphaunts -------- The Barrow wights Trolls Goblins Orcs Uruk-Hai Werewolves Vampires Wargs The giantSpiders-Shelob(children ofUngoliant) Úlairi -The Nazgul Crebain Urulóki- fire serpents (dragons) -------------------------------------- I think that covers alot of the races. hmm a lot of people there aren't strictly Races. Ungoliant isn't a Maia, she doesn't serve a Vala. The Balrogs are Ex-Maiar, as is Sauron, they all used to be Maiar. Olvar and kelvar? Now were getting silly, they aren't races, they are plants and animals. Beornings are a race of Men, and they are not all shape shifters I dont think.
What are Crebain? Is that the Kraken or something totally different? Uruks and Goblins are breeds of Orc. Urulóki are a type of Dragon, the other type being the Cold Drakes. Sorry that is a brilliant list of beings, but races (talking peoples) can probably be summed up as: Men Elves Ainur Dwarfs Orcs Spirited beings (anything that is inhabited by a spirit: Ents, Werewolves, Eagles and so forth) Yavanna that is a very good and very ott list

I had to do a brief intro to races in middle earth for school, this is what i got minus the main races, like elves, men, hobbits)
Balrogs: Maiar spirits who served Melkor, the Dark Enemy Eagles: Noblest of the winged creatures of Arda -brought forth by Manwë,Yavanna, messengers of Manwe Nazgul: (are they actually a race?) -once powerful kings and sorcerers among Men -each given a Ring of Power by Sauron -became wraiths entirely by the 23rd century, and thralls that sought only to serve Sauron Barrow-wights: Many tortured spirits fled from the Witch-kingdom of Angmar to seek shelter from the light of the Sun; demons who had become disembodied looking for other bodies in which their evil spirits could dwell. And so it was the Barrow-wights came into being, who animated the bones and jewelled armour of the ancient Kings of Men. Does anyone have info about the winged beasts the Nazgul ride? this is all i found: Winged Beasts Which Elves and Men had no name. They were ancient beasts that had come into the World before the Count of Time. |

At a guess I would say the winged beasts were things corrupted by Melkor from eagles before the awakening of the elves. Barrow Wights and Black Riders are not really races as such, they are dead people, or people that should be dead but wont go to mandos (and beyond).

Good lists, but what about the giants ?
Do halforcs, half-elves, petty dwarves, woses, mewlips, ogres and pygmies count?

What about neekerbreekers? I'm not really clear on what they are, but I know they exist in Middle-earth... aren't they swamp ghouls of some kind?
Galorme: The crebain were the crows, some of which were the spies of Saruman (Do the words "Crebain from Dunland!" ring a bell?) Let's see if I can name a few others, Yavanna basically covered most of them... There are also the Huorns, of which Old Man Willow may well be (the less 'awake' trees than the Ents). Of the orcs there were the snaga, the weaker breed, slaves of Sauron; the Uruks, warriors; and the Moria orcs, whom one could consider a subterranean species, seeing they have developed such huge eyes.

You can hardly call some birds a race can you? They were on a side, but at one point every single creature was on a side (cf the war of wrath).
