Portrayal of Rohirrim
I just saw the trailer for the two towers on the dvd(like a kid who throws away the card and takes the gift, i did the same with the special features disk)While i do realize that the rohirrim are akin to the numenoreans, why is it that PJ made them look so much like he numenoreans during the battle? Is the kinship the sole reason. The trailer showed the rohirrim using the sme type of weapon that the numenoreans used in the fellowship prolouge. Why is this?

Are you speaking of when you see them riding with Eomer or at Helm's Deep?

Oh... highlight the following to read the answer (spoilers):
The armor you are seeing is not that of the Rohirrim... it is in fact Elvish armor because the Elves come to Helm's Deep to fufill their alliance with the men (such as the battle in the beginning of the first movie). It's actually a nice touch, in my opinion... you will see for yourself soon enough!
OK, so now it makes sense.
[ December 11, 2002: Message edited by: Tigerlily Gamgee ]
[ December 11, 2002: Message edited by: Tigerlily Gamgee ]

would that also make the weaponry elvish? Surely the people of Rohan have customary weaponry?
[ December 11, 2002: Message edited by: WarBringer ]

Also, if anyone has any comments on the portrayal of the Rohirrim, please post them.

Sorry I keep doing this "highlight" thing, I just don't want people who don't want to be spoiled to read these on accident... Big Spoilers if you highlight

Most of the shots you see at Helm's Deep are the Elves with their armory and weaponry. The men who are part of the Rohirrim are very old or very young and have weaponry that's not exactly up to par. Eomer and his men are not at Helm's Deep, so those who are fighting for Rohan are not really men who are meant to fight. If the Elves didn't come they would've been screwed! So, in the shots in the preview you really aren't seeing the Rohirrim at all, you are only seeing the Elves (they are the ones who line the wall with Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli).. you'll see this better in the film. It is all done very well & the way the people of Rohan are handled while preparing for war is very emotional and very real to what people have been through on this earth.

Whew! That was a mouthful.

Númenórean blood was only in Gondor, where Elendil, Isildur, and Anárion landed during the Second Age. The Rohirrim lived under the eaves of Mirkwood up until about the twenty-third century TA. They were probably closer related to the Easterlings than to the Edain.

it is stated in Unfinished tales that Gondor gave Rohan to Eorl, which would make them akin, correct?

The Numenoreans are not related to the Rohirrim. I think, as someone previously said, they are more closely related to the Easterlings.
And also I got the impression that Numenoreans were generally dark-haired and Rohirrim always blonde. Is this true?
[ December 11, 2002: Message edited by: -Imrahil- ]

i think that all rohirrim are blonde haired, while Gondorians have dirty blonde-brown hair, although this may just be because of PJ's portrayal...

If you gave a friend an acre of a 4-acre lot, would that make you brothers? And even so, by then the Gondorians weren't necessarily Númenóreans anymore.

So long as they have blond hair I will be O.K. (The hobbits hair and Boromir's hair reallybothered me)

You dont lose your ancestry over the course of time. Both gondor and rohan's people of numenorean blood, and as such, they are distantly related.
