translation of "The Fall of Gil-galad"
I was re-reading FotR the other day, and I came across the part in "A Knife in the Dark" where Sam says some of a poem about Gil-galad. Reading on, Aragorn says that this poem was in "an ancient tongue." So I thought, maybe that was Quenya. And now to my point: I tried translating it into Quenya, and I'd very much appreciate it if you would offer your critique. I'm still learning so I'm most likely wrong on stuff like grammar. Also, I had to kind of derive some stuff, see bottom for notes on weird words. Here it is (English then Quenya):
Gil-galad was an Elven-king. Of him the harpers sadly sing: the last whose realm was fair and free between the Mountains and the Sea. His sword was long, his lance was keen, his shining helm afar was seen; the countless stars of heaven’s field were mirrored in his silver shield. But long ago he rode away, and where he dwelleth none can say; for into darkness fell his star in Mordor where the shadows are. Elen-cálë né Eldaron aran. Sen i tyalangani úvalinavë lindar: ardarya né i telda ëa vanya ar léra imbë i Oronti ar i Eär. Macilerya né anda, ehterya né laica, sílala cassarya háya né cenna; i únótimë eleni Menelwa pelero ner naltaina mi silma turmarya. Mal anda yá nornë sinomello ar yasse mára laquén polë quetë; an morniesse lantane elenerya Mornóressë yassë i fuini ëar.

I must say that I know practically nothing about Quenya, (working on learning Sindarin), but I think you did a good job. I'm not sure if it is Quenya, but in the books (& Arwen in the movie) say. "Noro lim Asfaloth." Noro lim I'm pretty sure means "ride fast" or something like that.
Typically I'll see "horse" shortend... (Sindarin again, but it's an idea)... Like Rochan became Rohan ect. ect. ect. Hope that helps. -Elrowen [ June 23, 2003: Message edited by: Elrowen Greenleaf ]

hmm... I hadn't thought about "noro lim." That line is in Sindarin, but the verb stem might be the same-- so maybe "rode" should be "nornë". Or, if "rocco" (horse) is shortend maybe it's rocnë. I think I like nornë better, I'll add that change. Thank you!!!
P.S. I like the pic under your name. Those animated things are awesome.

Well, most Quenya speakers seem to have vanished since the close of the (primarily)Elvish forum (and I know I am guilty of not popping in in a looooong time!) But The council of Elrond still has an Elvish forum. Ardalambion.com has the BEST Quenya course, and I believe some links to dictionaries. I will pop off and try and find a link to the dictionary I use. I'll have a look through your translation.

What's the address for the council of Elrond website? I can't find it.
The Ardalambion course is definitely awesome (actually, that's where I'm learning from).

Strangely enough I once translated The Fall of Gil-Galad into Gaeilge.
Bhí Gil-Galad rí na Críonna... Oh well I won't bore you with the rest
