The wrong end of the stick?
Has anyone that you know said something totaly stupid about LOTR? My friend saw the first bit, loved it, but must have missed someting:
My friend: Yeah, first there was this boy and this big tall dude. Me: gandalf? my friend: Yeah, but he died, I mean really died, in real life. He had a beard I think. Anyway, they went on a quest to find a ring, because it would give them power. Then the dude left, and three other boys joined the first one. They got chased by big black guys, and then captured by an ugly man. Finaly (and this is the best bit), they went and stayed at this really pretty hotel. Me: HOTEL? My friend: Yeah, a hotel, with bridges and waterfalls and stuff. It must have been a very high class hotel, and was run by this other dude, with a dress. Emlon or something. Me: Elrond. My friend: Yeah whatever. Thats all i saw, but it was dead good anyway! Me: (falls on floor lauging) My friend: Are you okay? Whats wrong, should I get a teacher? Ever had an encounter like this?

My god did that guy have an I.Q of 10? (No offence) I've never met anyone who has said something so stupid about LoTR. Amazing.

Unfortunately not everyone absorbs the movies like a sponge like most LotR fans. Or watch it a million times to soak in every detail.
I guess we just have to feel sad for those poor, wretched creatures. Those without Tolkien.

I remember years ago, my father and I were reading LotR out loud, and my mother kept coming in and out of the room. He had just read out the bit when Arwen sent Aragorn the banner, "I send thee what I have made for thee..." and my mum chips in with "What is it, a cake?"
I can't read that bit without thinking of that. [ February 25, 2003: Message edited by: Elanor ]

The two rings? A cake?! *has a good long laughing fit*
Quote:
My favorite encounter was with my brother. I was watching FotR, which he has never seen all the way through, and he walked in. The gist of it follows: Bro: "Aren't these guys trying to destroy that ring?" Me: "Yeah." Bro: "Then why is that guy trying to steal it?" Me: "Because his city is going to fall and he thinks the ring will save it." Bro: "... a ring? What's that gonna do?" Me: "It's a Ring of Power." Bro: "So? When you put it on you become invisible. How's that gonna save your city?" Me: *getting irritated* "Go away. You're making me miss Boromir."

Oh, my! Cake? Two Rings? WOW!
Well, my sister said something that made me want to shoot an arrow into her back. Sis: (on the phone) No! I'm not watching Lord of the Rings! Me: It's so good, Trina! Watch it! Sis: No way. It's just like Harry Potter. It's the exact same thing. Me: AAAGHH! PREPARE TO DIE!!

We finally got my Dad to watch it Friday night..first he saw Gollum and said that the author must have had an evil imagination. Then when Frodo was confronted by the Ringwraiths at Weathertop, he says "If I were him I'd throw the Ring at them!"
Guess my Dad would not have made a good Ringbearer... Kids are fun though. My nephew is ten and Mom finally let me show FOTR to him. Towards the end, when Frodo is standing at the river holding the ring, my nephew says "DON'T drop it, kid!" Hehe... BTW My dad never finished the movie. He fell asleep during the Council of Elrond

I've had several trauamtizing experiences with Lord of the Rings, and all of them my best friends or immediate family members.
Once, I had the following exchange with my grandmother: Me: Did you know that C.S. Lewis and Tolkien were actually good friends? Grandmother: Yeah *insert smiley chuckle* Two goons! At this, I became beyond hurt that my grandmother would betray me so. I was so wounded I was forced to stomp from the room with an exxasperated sigh and seek refuge in my bed room. I also had the following exchange with my friend: Me: So have you seen the new movie? (It would be pointless to ask if she'd read the books. She's a star wars type.) S: Yeah. Me: Who's you're favorite character? S: Guess. Me: Frodo? S: Who? Me: (slowly) The short hobbit who carried the ring to Mordor. S: Huh? And that was the general gist of the conversation. My lord, there must be someone in Alaska besides my mother who will have a decent conversation about Lord of the Rings with me!

I forced my mom to watch FOTR and TTT cuz I want her to see ROTK, since I'm hoping it'll be incredibly sad (she loves tragedy and sad stuff)
Me: ...so Gollum led Frodo and Sam to the Black to Mordor where they have to destroy the Ring, but it was too heavily guarded. Mom: Who's Gollum? Me: The skinny guy that says preciousss. Mom: Oh, I thought he was ET. Now who's Frodo? Me: The wimpy hobbit that you think needs braces. Mom: Oh yeah! Now, where did the trees go? I mean, they were at the tower, then there was ET, and no trees! Me: THERE ARE 4 HOBBITS! WIMP, SAM, PIPPIN, AND PIPPIN'S FRIEND! PIPPIN AND MERRY WERE WITH THE TREES! Mom: Oh, I thought Pippin was in the Hobbit. Did you know that I named a cat I had once after him? I thought it was a cute name for a cat. (she never read the book, she just said she was reading the inside flap of the hardcover) Me: I KNOW! Just so you know, we went to the 8:30 show and didn't get home till like 12:30 AM. This is basically my mom's character list. Frodo: Wimp Sam: Sam or Sean Merry: Pippin's friend Pippin: Pippin or my old cat Aragorn: the guy Boromir: the evil guy Legolas: Blondy Boy that never runs out of arrows Gimli: the short guy with the beard down to his knees Faramir: the other guy Haldir: the mean blond guy that dies Galadriel: Snow White (she finds the seven dwarves getting the Rings funny) Sauron: the Dark Lord Saruman: Christopher Lee or the evil wizard that works for the Dark Lord Wormtongue: the guy with no eyebrows or the guy that works for the evil wizard that works for the Dark Lord Gollum: ET or Naked Boy Gandalf: the good wizard that comes back to life or Ian McKellan Ugh, moms sometimes.

Okay this probably sounds stupid compared to some of these but I thought it was hilarious.
I had just gone to see TTT with my friend and her cousin and we all agreed it was very good. Afterwards we went to Pizza hut and began talking about our favourite parts. My friend: I like the part with Arwen when she goes to sail to the land of ever lasting death. Me: *choke* My friend: Ooops Hahahahaha Of course she realised the mistake but I still wonder how she made it in the first place.

Here's the best one ever: During one of my rampant "Boromir Obsession" moments, I was watching FotR; the part where the Fellowship come up over the hill between the two rocks to a crescendo of music. When Boromir appeared, I cat-called loudly. Boromir is behind the horse in that scene. My mother poked her head in from the kitchen, took one look and screeched, "Boromir is a horse's rear!" She had to run fast to get away from certain destruction. Now it's a running inside joke.

Sadbh, I'm a Star Wars fan, too, but I've read LOTR. Just so you know.
I do know a lot of people that have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to LOTR. My sister for example. I'll start talking about the movie and when I name a character, she's like "Who?" and I have to describe the actor or actress to her. Luckily I have other friends who know something about it. One of my friends knows enough about it to know when he saw TTT that I would be mad about Faramir in the movie.

i forgot what i was going to say!!! oh yeah heres one.
We were watching the movie 'Ghost and the darkness' in my world geography class. I noticed that the actor that played the doctor looked a lot like Theoden from TTT. when my teacher has stopped the movie i said to a few of my friends 'that doctor guy looks Theoden!' and they are like 'who?' and one of the people i said that too has read the books and seen the movies. so i am like 'Theoden from TTT' and she looked at me weird. so i said 'Theoden, the king of Rohan. the oldish looking guy.' finally she got it, or acted like she got it. that made me mad cuz i figured she would know. and she pronounces Theoden wrong. and that reminds me...... one day in my spanish class, after a test, we got time to do whatever we wanted, and these two guys sitting near me were discussing rotk. i was just sitting there drawing a picture(of an elf) and listening to them. one of the guys was reading rotk and he was telling the other one about it. this was like a week ago so i cant remember everything. but the guys were pronouncing every name in the book wrong! and everytime they said something wrong i would whisper the right way to myself. it bugged me so much!!! they pronounced Minas Tirith 'minus turuth' and Eowyn 'eeeowine' and Theoden 'theeoden' and they couldn't remember Galadriel's name! they called her 'that one chick with the weird mirror'!!! there was more but i dont remember. i probably have more crazy stories but i cant remember them now..... -nevie

The most common mistake I know of is when people call the movie The Twin Towers (and that happens quite often). Aargh! I can't stand when people do that! How can you possibly forget the name of a movie AFTER you have seen it?!

Sorry, Mithril. I wans't trying to imply that Star Wars fans can't be LotR fans, too. It's just that I don't think this particular friend would consider reading the Lord of the Rings until she's read every last Star Wars book. Oh, I don't know, I keep telling myself to be quiet, but it never works.

Oh, I just remembered when my orthadontist was asking tons of qquestions, so I answered one of them just to make her shut up.
O: Have you seen any movies lately? M: Yeah. O: Like what? M: The Two Towers. O: Which one is that? M: Uhhh... Lord of the Rings... O: Never heard of it. Is it good? M: The book is better... O: Oh, I know!! Isn't it the one with the kangeroo?

where did that come from? the only link between Lord of the rings and a kangaroo is that the wargs bear a v. slight resemblance to them

The recent number of (Finnish) Cosmopolitan had a picture of Liv Tyler and the following caption(my translation): "L.T. chose this outfit for the opening of the movie Twin Towers..." I almost dropped off my chair of amazement: how can they print that! I so should be their editor!

I went to see TTT with a friend of mine, and she asked me this during the movie.... Friend: Hey, you know that wizard guy? Me: Gandalf? Friend: Yeah, do he and that blonde chick (Eowyn) get married? Me: EOWYN?!?!? Friend: yeah Me: ..........no. GANDALF and EOWYN? That disturbed me...... but then again, what is an age difference of a millenia or two matter when True Love is involved? ........

Why does everyone assume that a kangaroo would be evil? Why cant the ring bearer be a kangaroo? he could keep the one ring in his little pouch!

Oh. My. Giddy uncle. I officially hate my mealth teacher! Today, we somehow got a little off topic and were talking about the Odyssey (okay, a LOT off topic).
Health Teacher: And the Ring of Fire, that trilogy you're all reading now, that's like a modern day Odyssey. Yes, who here has read The Hobbit And The Ring of Fire? Me and my two friends: Uhhhhhhhh... *raise hands* Health teacher: Yes, a very good book, isn't it? I think they made a movie of it, The Hobbit and the Ring of Fire. I HATE HER! Well, everyone does... Oh, and Rynoah, I like Boromir too, my mom just calls him the evil guy.

i was talking to my friend one day during our PE class and we got talking about TTT movie. i can't really remember the conversation, but i remember that we were talking about Gandalf. I said something to her about Gandalf the White being the same person as Gandalf the Grey but she did not believe me. she kept saying that they were totally different people. so i had to explain to her the whole thing with him. after about ten minutes of argueing she finally believed me. it was so frustrating because she thinks she has to be right. Sometimes i wonder if people actually pay attention to the movie......
