Sil page 232 "But it is said that Hurin would not live thereafter, being bereft of all purpose and desire, and cast himself at last into the western sea;and so ended the mightest of the warriors of mortal Men." Think that pretty much sums it up.

And just to add Turin son of Hurin and Slayer of Glaurung should be a close second, much as i like Aragorn nothing he did solely on his own can compare to killing the father of all dragons single handly. But thats just my view on it.

My vote goes for Hurin too.
This topic has been discussed in great detail here: Greatest Man of Middle-Earth?

I'm going to be unoriginal and say Hurin and Turin.
Hurin was awesome in battle, and didn't crumble in Morgoth's presence, resisting him for over 20 years. Turin did harm to Morgoth's forces everywhere he went, and also became the leader everyplace he went. Without the curse on him, he would've done even better. Hurin and Turin would make the ultimate tag-team.

But remember, Húrin was abandoned by Turgon and caused the downfall of Doriath....and he was only the "greatest warrior". Túrin was cool, but still didn't have enough insight to avoid marrying his own sister. I'd say Beren, because he recovered one of the Silmarils from Morgoth's crown, and he killed a great many baddies, and he married Lúthien, the greatest Elf, and was the forefather of the entire Númenórean royal bloodline, and....well, you get the idea.

I loved the story of Beren and Luthien, when Luthien cast off her cloak and stunned Meklor and all his court(his court being Balrogs and worse)with her song.Pretty amazing to think about what that song sounded like.
