I knew almost imediately that it would be one of Bilbo's nicknames from The Hobbit. First I was looking at the names he gave to Smaug, but on a whim I flipped back through the book and came across 'burrahobbit' and I've used it ever since for anything Tolkien related. There is a similar topic in The Barrow-downs called "Where'd you get that nick?" Some reasons why I took this alias I have: - it's orcish, and I like orcs - it means "Old Man", and age is something I respect greatly - "Old Man" is somehow ironic for my person - "Old Man" has an air of wisdom, and still decrepitude, infirmity, so to say - it sounds nicely grim - it refers to Saruman, one of the most interesting characters, and also a rebel - it is a clear Tolkien reference, but not as obvious as others Put "in nuce", it is a nóme de guerre, a war-mask like a dwarf's; not a shiny-happy one. Not that I feel like at war here, but when I put on a mask it needn't be one which smiles and covers a face which is also smiling. Besides, it might be taken as politically questionable if I followed red's example and called myself "brown"....
Be still, O wand'rer! / Dost thou not hear the sad song of night? / How the wind does beckon thee to rest for a while / and to lend him thine ear? / What woeful tale does it tell tonight? / What tragedy of old?

|

My surname is Dagelur Hello Dear Fellows! I am a newcomer here and I am happy to see such fair folk in the virtual (but real) Middle Earth. After beginning to read the LotR, i felt the need to choose a nickname...but not to take any name already existing in the story. I wanted to choose my own nickname, sounding "Middle-Earth"...and I chose DAGELUR, which is a partial anagram of my name and my Girlfriend's name in French. This nickname was not chosen at random, for each set of 3 letters makes up another word or the beginning of an other word. Then, in DAGELUR you can see: DAG for DAGGER AGE for AGE! ELU (=ELECTED in French) LUR for LURKING! (That's just for fun, I don't wish to embody any evil creature!) I wish you all a good journey across Middle Earth and hope to meet you on, or outside the East Road. Your Dagelur
|

Amyrlis (pronounced ah-meer-lis, with accent on meer) Dornathan. I made it up by adding some letters to my first & middle names. I kind of wish that I would have picked something with true Tolkien meaning. All of yours are great! I've also been toying with changing it to the name of the Vanyar elf who Finrod loved yet left behind in Aman - I just noticed her name in the Sil - Amarie. Oh to be the only love of Finrod Felagund! -amyrlis
These are indeed strange days. Dreams and legends spring to life out of the grass. -Eomer
