I doubt if Deagol may be counted among bearers. His possesion of the ring lasted no more than half an hour, and he even had no chance of putting the ring on his finger, poor thingie

...less doth yearning trouble him who knoweth many songs, or with his hands can touch the harp - his possesion is his gift of glee which God gave him...

Re: favorite ring bearer

Looking back on this post, I think most people might have answered who there favorite person was who happened to bear the ring. But I am wondering who was the best at bearing the Ring? And who really messed up? Isildur probably takes the prize on the latter.

Isildur should have tossed the Ring into the Fire, sure. Chalk up his mistake to a momentary weakness. And once he had the Ring in his possesion,he couldn't get rid of it voluntarily. He made up for it at the Gladden Fields though. Certainly the noblest Ring Bearer.

I'd have to say that Bilbo was the best ring-bearer, in the sense that he could give the ring up of his own free will.

Yes even Frodo confessed to not being able to throw away the ring... int the end Smeagol had to do it, and that was most certainly not how he probably wanted things to turn out.. I agree with Zoe on this one too...

Re: Re

Yep! Bilbo has got to be the best! Certainly, he had the most fun with it!

But then again, Frodo bore it knowing what a horrible thing it was, and having some idea what it was doing to him!

Bilbo bore it in ignorance, which was relatively blissful...

But, doggone it! I just like Sam best!

Isildur has no excuse. Not with Elrond, the brother of the first of his own lineage telling him to hurl it into the forge of Orodruin near at hand. (Of course, that's where the Ring exerted its greatest strength...)

I'm too wishy-washy for this!

Frodo suffered most. (Not counting Smeagol, who started with murder and deserved [yes, Gandalf, deserved!] what he got...) So I guess Frodo of the Nine Fingers gets my vote.

Finally!

(But then, nobody mentioned Gandalf, who held it long enough to hurl it into the fire at Bag End...)

Sam certainly used the Ring intelligently. Putting it on on the confines of Mordor was a stroke of brilliance. He could hear the Orcs better, and escaped from them.
Then again, Frodo bore it for two years, and still managed to cast it into the Fire at the end. If I was deciding, Frodo would take the prize.

But.

But Gwaihir, Frodo didn't cast the Ring into the Fire of his own free will. Even he was overcome by the temptation and power of the Ring at last.
I think Sam was the best Ring bearer. Then again, he had it for such a short time that the Ring didn't affect him too much. Anyhow, I liked him the most.

Re: what about Tom

yes, lindil did in the beginning, well he said i forgot bombadil but he remembered him in his post. Gandalf 'held' the ring for a few seconds to! i don't think ne1s mentioned him. Hmm... i'd say probably Bilbo but if you mean who used it best then i'd say sam. Frodo made a bunch of mistakes with it e.g. 'oh look heres a bunch of black riders! i'd better put the ring on so they don't see me!' sam was much more practical, and bilbo used it well, escaping from orcs. But Bilbo also used it with an sense of humour.

Sam the Man

I think he would have been able to chuck it too.
Sam had overcome his initial temptation to be the Master - Gardener and hours later frodo [after torture it's true] was hallucinating sam as an orc. Frodo was pretty much thrased by the time he got to Mordor after Shelob and the tower. Sam gets my vote

Lindil is often found on posting on the Silmarillion Project at the Barrowowns and working on his own board Osanwe-Kenta[/i]- 'The dwindling Men of the West would often sit up late into the night, and awaken early before dawn- exchanging lore and wisdom such as they possessed , so that they should not fall back into the mean and low estate of those , who never knew or more sadly still, had indeed rebelled against the Light.'

Frodo of the Nine Fingers

Okay, despite the excellent arguments made here for Sam and Bilbo, I have to say I think Frodo was the best ring bearer. Sam and Bilbo both gave it up (Bilbo, not without a great deal of help from Gandalf), but Sam had only had it for a few hours and Bilbo was nowhere near the source of it's power, nor did he ever suffer the way Frodo did. Plus, Bilbo simply had to give it to someone, not destroy it forever which I'm not sure he could have done either.

The way Frodo used the ring to command Gollum/Smeagol was brilliant, and basically kept them alive several times. In addition, his solemnity and singleness of purpose got him to the Cracks of Doom (with Sam's help), even if he wasn't able to throw it away on his own. So, Frodo gets my vote, though most of the bearers (with the exception of sauron, who probably used it better than ne1, and Gollum, who got too obsessed and started with violence) had some wonderful points.

yes but Frodo didn't have the ring for as long as bilbo, so of course it would be harder for bilbo to give/throw the ring away.

He had the mission to throw the ring into the fire. It must have been very
hard for him to carry on with his quest as the ring got more power over him.

Re: Frodo of the Nine Fingers

I like Bilbo more than Frodo, so I voted for him - he's my favourite - but Frodo was best. To carry on for so long with the mission of destroying it, and use it aainst Gollum, makes him best. Bilbo wasn't overpowered by it because he began by being nice to Gollum - which Frodo also did, if not in the beginning - and he didn't know its power. He wouldn't have done so well if he'd been faced with the Nazgul and such like. I mean, come on, wouldn't you use it if you thought it would help escape them?
Frodo was best, definately. But you know, I was wondering - why did Gandalf think he'd be able to throw it into a fire with the purpose of destroying it, after bearing it for a long time, when he couldn't throw it into an ordinary fire for a few moments right in the beginning?

~*Hannah*~ If one puts an idea forward to a true englishman - always a rash thing to do - he never dreams of considering whether the idea is right or wrong. The only thing he considers of any importance is whether one believes in it oneself. ~ Oscar Wilde

Re: Frodo of the Nine Fingers

I have to go with Frodo. Sure, he had a bit of trouble at the end. But he'd had the ring for a long time by then and we know that the longer it was in someone's possession the more powerfully they would wish to keep it. Bilbo had it for quite a long time, what with the journey and then the long time it was with him at Hobbiton. But there was never quite the importance of the ring at that time. By the time Frodo has it and is on his own journey, a much more difficult one that was Bilbo's, the ring is central to the survival of Middle Earth. Yep, Frodo's my lad.

Re: Frodo of the Nine Fingers

I think Frodo was the strongest of the Ring-bearers, or else he wouldn't have been chosen, or rather somehow ended up with the task of bearing it. It wasn't left to him in idleness or ignorance. So, I think Frodo was the one who was most able to bear the Ring, but Sam was the one least affected by it. It may have been because he had it for a short amount of time, but I think it was because Sam did not use it for himself. Every time he touched it he did it with his master in mind, and I think that, rather than the length of time, was what kept him from corruption.

Re: Frodo of the Nine Fingers

i think that you are completely right about sam, and that is why he is my favorite. he carries the ring with no selfish intentions whatsoever, all is done in love of his master. he was the least affected by the ring, which shows how strong he was when he carried it. sam was just so willing and not corrupted by anything, that i see him as being the best ring bearer. also, when frodo asked for the ring back, sam willingly gave it, and did not try to keep it for himself, as he could have done.

Re: Frodo of the Nine Fingers

Its between Frodo and Bilbo for me but in the end I picked Bilbo, i think he got it in the coolest way he didnt just get it handed down to him, he had to get it from Gollum. that was very cool

RE:frodo or bilbo

i think i'd narrow it down to frodo and bilbo. though i think bilbo used in a very clever way,he didn't bear it for long.
Bilbo bore the ring for the longest.however he had no clue whatsoever of the implications of the ring. But you cannot deny the fact after bearing it for as long as he did he had the will power to give it up
he also obtained the ring by his own ingenuity

as for frodo he knew all about the ring and agreed to take it to mordor which was a much bigger burden
for me i guess its a tie between frodo and bilbo

Re: favorite ring bearer

my vote goes to Frodo. It took courage to stand up at the council of Elrond and volunteer to take the ring into Mordor; all the more so when you consider the events at Weathertop. Gandalf probably did forsee the possible torment that Frodo would have been faced with at the last, but was shrewed enough to realise that he would have help in casting it into the fire and not necessarily from Sam.

Everybody guess who I voted for! *HINT* Look at my name!

"Good Morning!" said the dragon. "You seem surprised."
"Good Morning! said Farmer Giles. "I am that!"
