Sting How Many of You Know Sindarin?

I just wanted to take a 'survey'. I know Sindarin and I just wanted to see who else knew it.

You might get more feedback on this in the languages forum.

I'm also curious. If you "know" Sindarin, how did you actually learn it? Was there a particular website or resource that helped you? I remember Aradalambion, for example, had a detailed course on Quenya, but a bit less on Sindarin.

And what level of expertise do you mean by "knowing" the language? To me,when a person says they "know" a language, it means they're very comfortable with it, inside and out.

Don't get me wrong. I do not "know" either Quenya or Sindarin, so whatever you've learned is a great deal more than I've mastered! People who learn one of Tolkien's languages definitely fascinate me, since I've never managed to do that, even though I've been familiar with the books for many years. I'd just like you to give us some background behind your question.

<font color="aqua">Why are you such a kill-joy burrahobbit? <font color="white">I have also learned (the politically correct way... instead of saying "know" its "learned") to write Sindarin. In the appendices at the back of the ROTK you can find a complete, almost, grammar guide to Sindarin. A little time of figuring and you can have the whole alphabet translated.<font color="aqua"> , that, my dear burrahobbit is how you can "Know" Sindarin. <font color="white"> I always sign my name in sindarin, for those who want to know.

Dunno, just am. I think that I'm about to do it again, too. You are confusing Sindarin with the Tengwar. Tengwar are the letters that you write with, Sindarin is the language.

I know a little Sindarin--I just haven't any basic proficiency yet, but am learning.

I need somebody to talk to in the 'noble tongue.'

Question

One question tha Child mentioned: Did you get this off of a site? If so, then it may not be true Tolkien Elvish. True Tolkien Elvish would be only found in the books. And if you mean by 'know' Sindarin as in you can speak it and write a bit in full sentences, but not fluently then I will say I can. But I prefer to take my Elvish straight from the books, so I know it is the true Tolkien Elvish. And if you mean 'fluently' as in can speak and write quickly, then I believe few people will ever know it as much as Tolkien did.

If you want more references to Tolkien Elvish, then check in the back of the Silmarillion. There shuld be a small dictionary with commonly used Elvish prefixes and suffixes.

That's the spirit, Estel! You'll never know it like you could know English, though, as it was never finished. You wouldn't be able to have a real conversation, but you could write some poetry.

I've also obsessed over the elements of words in the Sil and writing in the Tengwar and in Dwarvish runes. I have no idea how, but my dad (another obsessor) downloaded seven LotR fonts onto our computer. It still is more fun to use my calligraphy pens with 'em, though

You can download Tolkien fonts here at the Barrow-Downs. Just go to the fonts section. They have them for both Macs and Windows.

Tolkien

I am learning to speak (and correctly pronounce!) both Sindarin and Quenya. I found this wonderful little book by Ruth S. Noel called The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth; it includes both forms of Elvish as well as Tengwar and runes, and some Dwarvish, Black Speech, and various other tid-bits of "all fourteen of the languages Tolkien invented."
