The Hobbit book- who's your fave character???
Who was your fovorite character in the Hobbit???
Mine was probably Beorn. Also did Gandalf make the right choice by leaving the company so many times??? [ August 01, 2002: Message edited by: RiderOfRohan ] [ August 01, 2002: Message edited by: RiderOfRohan ]

Bilbo, of course! I think Gandalf knew what he was doing, and, seeing as how the quest was successful, I think he made the right choices. Besides, if he had not left the group at times Bilbo would never have had the opportunity to gain the trust and respect of the dwarves.

I liked Bilbo best too. And I think it was important that Gandalf left them at those times firstly so that the trusts could form between the dwarves and the hobbit, and also so that they could feel more independant and like the quest was their own, not Gandalfs (come on, we all know how much Bilbo likes telling stories, it would be good if most of them were true!)

Since it's about Bilbo, I guess a lot of people are going to say that, so I'll say Balin. He seemed to become a close friend to Bilbo. Then there's Beorn.

I really thought Bombur was funny. And Gandalf may not have wanted to leave the company so much, but he really didn't have much of a choice, with all that was happening in the South with the Ring and all those meetings with the white council.

I liked both Bilbo and Balin. Bilbo, obviously, is the main character and you can get attached to him very easily. I liked Balin because he was kind to Bilbo and he accepted him first.
Gandalf knew what he was doing; he needed the dwarves and Bilbo to trust each other, and if they just depended on the wizard, then they would never fully gain each other's trust. Plus, Gandalf was busy with Sauron and all that. |

Well, since it starts 60 years after The Hobbit and then takes another twenty years, I don't think Beorn would have been alive, since even though he was a shapeshifter, he was human. The Beornings, though, if I remember correctly, are mentioned.

Actually, Gollum would be good up there on the list. Riddle in the Dark was one of my favorite chapters.

My personal favorite was Beorn, Skin-Changer and ShapeShifter. A gardener, someone who could speak to beasts, and birds, who had a nice log cabin, and could change into a bear, who can crush and slay orcs, What else could you want?

My favorite was Gollum! Riddles in the Dark is also one of my favorite chapters. I'd also have to say Fili and Kili too. I'm sure why but for some reason I like them.

The trolls remind me of my buddies more by their conversation and wit rather than their looks, but one of them is 6-foot 5 and ugly, Starbreeze, and you would definitely shudder if you saw him.

I loved Beorn, he was almost like a sober Tom Bombadil.
Thorin was a great character, despite his decidedly dwarven flaws. He almost reminds me of a short, hairy Aragorn.

<font color=gold>I really like Mr. Bilbo, but I am also a fan of Beorn (there's just something about a man who knows how to bake and turn himself into a bear )

Probebly either Balin or Bilbo. Beorn was cool but we didn't really see a whole lot of him.
Gandalf had lots of other things on his mind, compared to the other stuff he was doing, like getting Saron out of Mirkwood, this dragon thing was not very big. He didn't want this to fail but he also did have other responsibilities.

My favorite character shows up only indirectly - it's the fabulous Belladonna Took, Bilbo's mother! What a woman that must have been, to have impressed Gandalf so much that he chose her son for adventures!

The Mayor of Lake-town. Just kidding!
Um...Beorn, or Gandalf. For some reason I liked Bilbo a little more in LotR. The Necromancer and Smaug were cool as well. And Bard is a legend No. Just like in LotR, I cannot give a definite answer. Well, maybe Beorn then.

I too found Beorn an interesting and imaginative character who I just plain enjoyed reading about but I have to admit to having a soft spot (no pun intended) for Smaug. I love the dramatic attack on Lake Town which I know is more to do with beautiful descriptive writing than characterisation of a dragon but it has stayed with me for years as a particular scene in the book. To be honest I love how each character has been created and picking a favourite is tricky but those are ones that stand out as well as the obvious protagonist, Bilbo.
