Cool! Are you going to try and publish it? It sounds like a really helpful project to people (like me) who want to know more about family trees etc. Good luck!

Good luck from me too! I hope it all goes well. Sounds useful and helpful. My father and his friend got quite confused after watching TTT, and I tried to explain it to him, but all he said was, "All I want is some sort of family tree! Or a guide or something!" I told him to read the books.

I especially like the idea for the Dwarves. Dwarves are my second favorite race

I know one place Tolkien got his inspiration for the Rings of Power...

He looked into Norse mythology and indeed much of ME was inspired from that mythology right down to Tolkien's description of Gandalf the Grey...

I recommend you look into Norse mythology and just see how much of ME and its people comes from it...

Tolkien definetely got a bunch of stuff from Norse mythology, I've read a lot about it, and the dwarves, for the most part, have Norse-sounding names.
You people are going to think I'm weird, but Aragorn reminds me of Sir Gawain from all the old King Arthur stories.
Best of luck, send me a copy when you are done, my poor, confused mother will finally get the whole Lord of the Rings series without asking me EVERYTHING.

Wow! Sounds very ambitious. Can't wait to see the line for Ungoliant. It probably would be huge! By the way, my English teacher has the Tolkien companion but she doesn't like Fantasy.

Sorry for my mistake guys.
I had originally posted this thread in the books and it was moved here because 'The Books' are only meant for Tolkien books.

"What's new" you ask?
Well....

I have completed 15 proper (That means I have done them properly on the computer) genealogies and only have about another 20 or more I think to do.

I have also done three (yes that's right) three calendars. I have done The Shire Reckoning (With proper weekdays and months) Bree Reckoning and King's Reckoning. I only have to do Steward's Reckoning, Dúnedain Reckoning, Calendar of Rivendell and New Reckoning.

I am having most trouble with New Reckoning as I found that some sources say one thing while others would say totally different things and it doesn't make sense!!

Anyway...A friend of mine and fellow Barrow-downer Iargwath (I think that's how you spell it) is doing the front cover (even though I haven't finished the book!). At the moment we are still deciding what to do (We are thinking of a Helmet dominating the cover, maybe with a white background or laying in the midst of a battle).
I am trying to stray away from scenes in Lotr, Hobbit and Silm as this book is about Middle-Earth.

A new thing I have done is the name or title of the book which I have decided to call "The Road to Middle-Earth".

The reason for this?
Because I have always thought that Tolkien liked the idea of roads and paths. In the Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo tells Frodo that the same road from Hobbiton leads to Rivendell and on to Esgaroth. Then we also have the paths of the dead. So in a sense, Roads can take us to danger and away from danger depending on the direction you take.

Also I feel as if Tolkien made his own path to M-E by bricks (Metaphoricly speaking his ideas and his way of story telling.

Another thing that I am adding to the book is a list of Middle-Earth names and their meanings.

Anyway,
Better get back to it.
Cya

"The Road to Middle-Earth" is a great title; unfortunately for your project, it's already been used for a book written 20 years ago by T. A. Shippey. That's a book worth reading, by the way!

I have already done these tree lines on the computer so far,
Chieftains of the Důnedain, Descendents of Prince Vidugavia of Rhovanion, Descent of Beorn, Descent of Dol Amroth, Kings of Arnor, Kings of Arthedain, Rhudaur and Cardolan, Kings of Dale, Kings of Gondor, Ruling Stewards of Gondor and The Kings of the Mark.
That sound pretty good Aragorn I already know alot about these families but I would like to know more about Prince Vidugavia of Rhovanion, Descent of Beorn and Descent of Dol Amroth.

They seem very interesting so would you be kind enough to either, produce a link to your works and email them to me at zacattack90@hotmail.com

Also about the Dwarves sounds very, very interesting as I have always wondered about what "House" Bifur,Bofur and Bombur came from and that would help me alot in my Story that I am currently starting so if you would be kind enough to either, produce a link to your works and email them to me at zacattack90@hotmail.com

Well my original A4 pages of the family trees just got a new makeover. Originally they were plain white with a black border and black writing. Now the paper is old and looks like a parchment from the Library if Minas Tirith. I also used a few techniques to make the writing faded and it looks really cool though it takes a long time to do so. Iargwath has seen it though but apart from that no one else (Except for my brothers and my parents)

Anyway,

That's classic! Hopefully one day you get at least one of your ideas published, then we can bring up a thread on it in Books! By then I should have about 3 million posts!

My favourite of your ideas is to collate all the Dwarf information. If you included, as you say, background stuff in one section such as dwarves in Norse legends, I'm sure you could pad it out to a whole book. You could maybe call it something simple and direct like Dwarves from Tolkien.

If you really want to get it off the ground, my advice would be to narrow and define your focus - decide exactly which idea you want to do first and go hard. Maybe think up a title soon and try to stick to that.

Yeah...I like where you're going with this Mr. Doug.
But...I'm holding off on the dwarf book at the moment and concentrating on the family trees, calendars and stuff.

Anyway I'm also busy with my move script so looks like it might be a while

So a lot of time has passed since I last graced these pages with my updates on my book. I have finished all genealogical trees and I have now started on my favorite race. The Ents. The thing that inspired me to research these delicate yet remarkably strong creatures is their look on life and their sad and unknown history. A re-reading of the “Two Towers” chapter ‘Treebeard’ has opened my mind to a lot of different things. I think now that I have actually discovered the actual distance that Entstrides are measured in. Unfortunately I am not one for maps and I have not yet been able to put my theory down properly. If anyone has any experience with maps could you please contact me so I can figure it out properly?

Another theory that I have (not based on the Ents though) is in the chapter “The Uruk-hai” the orcs give Merry and Pippin a drink. A hot liquid and revitalizing yet disgusting drink which I believe is to be a type of Whisky or Moonshine, though I will delve into that more when I start the next book on “Orcs and other terrible creatures”.

One thing that I have forgotten about is illustrations. That is why I bring it to you artist Downers that have a couple of non-used black and white sketches of non-characters from Middle-Earth (i.e. Ents! Orcs, Riders of Rohan, Gondorians, Hobbits etc, etc)

Cya's all later
