Elvish Glass
When the mouth of Sauron appears at the black gate, he says to Aragon "it takes more than a piece of elvish glass to make a king". What is he talking about? Am I overlooking something really simple?

He's speaking of the Elessar, the Elfstone. It's the green stone brooch that Galadriel gave Aragorn in Lorien, a sign of his lineage and so forth. The Mouth of Sauron is mocking his claim to the throne by simply having the Elfstone.
And to avoid confusion, Aragorn is named Elessar after the stone, it being the name he takes as King.

Couldn`t have said it better myself, Luthien_Tinuviel. I was confused at first, thinking I had gone to the Movies page. I hate when that happens!

Wasn't he also wearing the Star of Elendil on his brow. I know he was wearing it when he came with the dead army but did he have it on at the gate? If so, can it also be counted as 'elvish glass'?

The previously postulated answer is correct; the "elvish glass" mocked by the Mouth of Sauron is the Elfstone given Aragorn by Galadriel.
On a more random thought however, what was the Star of Elendil? I know what it is but I can't put my finger on it...

I was going to mention this on the movies forum sooner or later, but did you notice that in RotK, the Voice of Sauron says slowly: "Aaaaaragorn. Eeeeellsar." But the Elfstone was never shown, or mentioned! Galadriel calls him that too, in the EE.

From the Complete Guide to Middle Earth:
Elessar : (Q.: 'elf-stone') The name under which Aragorn (q.v.) took the throne of the Reunited Kingdom. It was foretold for him by Galadriel, and was given him by the people of Gondor during the WR because of the great emerald brooch, a gift from Arwen, which he wore. I dont know if this is truly correct, but its what i found. If im wrong, I apologise. <font size=1 color=339966>[ 11:58 PM January 20, 2004: Message edited by: manaratowen ]
