What exactly is gollum? My mom asked and I told her that he was Smeagol and he was a hobbit in his beginnings. Was I right?

Gollum Rules. We is Gollum, and we is no normal hobbit, no! Hobbits are pathetic life-forms! We is a mutilated, or highly evolved, hobbit, far superior to any Bagginses or Took or any other pitiful normal Hobbitses!!!!
