Does anybody know what subject Tolkien taught at Oxford (was it Oxford) university?

I think-yes, I'm pretty sure it was ancient english, or smth like that.

Drools like, drooling Homer Simpson for Doughnuts. it doesnt mean he's attracted to the doughnut in any way apart from eating it: he really really would like to eat the doughnut. In the same way I'd LOVE to have JRRT is as a teacher/friend. I do not in any way love him except for his abilities as an author.
Was I right about his subject by the way?
