Smeagol's Race?
LOTR says that Smeagol was of a hobbit like race who lived on the banks of the Anduin. What were they? Were they the original Hobbits who then migrated for some unknown reason?

Gollum was a Stoor Hobbit. Gollum's people split from the other Stoors in the fifteenth century of the Third Age, when troubled times in Eriador led them to migrate back eastwards across the Misty Mountains, and settle on the banks of the Gladden River.

All the hobbits apparently had once lived in Wilderland near the Anduin. They migrated west for unclear reasons and crossed the mountains. Many of them went to Bree, others (Stoors) went to the Angle between Hoarwell and Loudwater, or Dunland. Of these some later returned to Wilderland out of fear of Angmar, and because the climate worsened in the east of Eriador. They settled by the banks of the Gladden, Gollum's family being among them.
