2 questions about Lurtz
I have two questions regarding Lurtz.
1,Did he exist in the book? 2.How would you have liked him if he had been female?Just imagine-terrifying, black,ugly,muscular,strong,scary...and female! I would have loved that.

So, were Lurtz and Ugluk the same character in the movies?
As for your second question, Lurtz female style would be too revolting to imagine!

No. Ugluk has a small speaking part in TTT.

Ugluk's fabulous line: "Look's like meat's back on the menu, boys!"
Lurtz was most definitely not in the book. Hey, Sean Bean had to have some kind of heroic, funky death scene.... *swoons*

Oh yeah, Lurtz was in command of the Uruk-Hai who pursued the Fellowship. I will say this once again: sometimes I make myself sound really stupid.

What do you mean Sean Bean needed a "funky" death scene? Boromir's death scene was done greatly, regardless of Sean Bean's "death status" in movies...a heroic death scene for a heroic character!

It regards Boromir's death scene somehow needing the death of the main Orc, courtesy of Aragorn. So Lurtz was invented and Ugluk was relegated. What a shame. As the quotations on the top-right of your screen demonstrate, Ugluk commands.

To my knowledge Lurtz was not in the books and I really, really would not like to see or even have to think about a female Orc. I already know what male orcs look like and they're pretty gruesome lord knows what female orcs look like.

Incidentally, they could have made Ugluk the main orc, had him kill Boromir just as Lurtz does, leave with the other Uruks, then build him up a bit more in TTT (like his character in the books), and eventually have him slain by the Rohirrim. All in all, that might've been a better solution, and closer to the book, although I do love the shot of Lurtz cocking his bow a foot away from Boromir's face. You would have to lose that shot, obviously.

I still think having Aragorn do some flash-fighting takes away some tragedy from Boromir's death. Perhaps they wanted to lessen the impact. Maybe they thought the death-scene too sad.

Eomer, interesting point. I remember in a thread long long ago where you talked about, that at times in the movie it was really hard to get emotional. There was this sad, mournful scene, then suddenly Gimli's cracking jokes, or there's high-pushed action and you just can't get connected and emotionally involved into the movies. Yes I do remember that to this day. So, is that kind of how you felt here too? Here's this sad death of a mighty warrior, who made a mighty stand, yet it's not as effective because as Boromir is sitting their gurgling on his own blood Aragorn is ninja-ing it up with Lurtz.

Exactly, Boro. You're right: I've made the same point before and it's floating about on the forum somewhere. It's one example of where I think the films were designed to be just that bit more accessible for all types of movie-goer; and not just those wanting a fine tragedy.

I don't view the addition of a powerful Uruk captain as taking anything away from the film.
Peter Jackson explained that they wanted to give Boromir a more significant death than just the victim of many arrows fired by random orc soldiers. To have braved the Uruk-hai warriors with arrows already twisting his insides was indeed a great act, and a fitting, heroic end to the son of Gondor. A female Lurtz? I don't think any of us would want to imagine such a thing!

A female lurtz that would be scary wouldent want to get her mad. it would kill me if i woke up one morning with her lying in my bed next to me. just thinking bout it is enough to turn me off dating.

Lurtz had a pretty interesting bow in the movies and I wonder if it fits descriptions of Orc bows in the books (if there are any)

But Knight, that would have been delivered had Ugluk killed Boromir.
