I’ve been reading through the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, and I’ve been musing. A lot of the chief characters seem to have traits similar to the Valar, or in some cases, the Maiar. I’ve thought of some of my own, and I want to know what examples you guys can come up with. I don’t mean for you to write down Valar they had dealings with, but rather, Valar that they seem to have a like mood to, or characteristics, or elements that they’re associated with. And if any of you put down that all the Noldor are like to Aule, let you be shamed before Manwe because that’s just not creative enough! [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img] If you feel like it, give a reason for your connection (or if it’s complicated). You can use any character who is not already a Vala or Maia. (Oh, and for this, Morgoth is going to be counted as a Vala, horror of all horrors! [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]) Here are some of mine:

Tuor-Ulmo, because of the Sea-longing in Tuor’s heart and his mysterious voyage. Tuor also has a commanding presence, even without the voice of Ulmo to help him.

Morwen-Nienna, because even though she’s hard, I think she’s constantly mourning in her heart. Her life is filled with sadness, and she’s well associated with grief.

Luthien-Vana, the ever-young OR Nessa. Vana, because Luthien always seemed fearless and happy, which could be associated with being young. Nessa because Luthien was vigorous and independent. I can see her running with the deer. [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

Feanor-Aule, *Cough* It’s rather obvious, but because Feanor was “the most gifted of the elves” in all craftsmanship (except, perhaps, in ships? [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]), and because Aule was traditionally, “the Shaper.”

Turin-Osse, my main argument here is that they’re both perilous. Osse makes storms just because he feels like it and Turin can (quite by accident) slay his best friend before checking to see whom it is.

Beren-Orome, because both seemed willing to actually fight, if not Morgoth himself, then the servants of Morgoth. Orome charged often into Middle Earth to hunt the dangerous beasts when the other Valar let it be, and Beren charged right up to the very throne of Morgoth (well, actually, he slinked, and it was with the help of Luthien…oh give him a break, he’s a man. [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img])

Boromir (skipping ahead to LotR)-Orome. I think Boromir was born to fight and hunt, just like Orome, and if that isn’t good enough for you, they both have a very important horn.

Voronwe-Yavanna, for Voronwe’s love of Nan-Tathren and all the things that grew there. The power of that place even kept him there for a while, staying his longing for the sea [img]smilies/eek.gif[/img]

Mim-Morgoth, one word: Treachery. *Goes off grumbling about petty dwarves*

There are probably a million more I could point out, but I’m not going to take the time (lazy me [img]smilies/smile.gif[/img]). What other connections can you come up with?

P.S. Apologies for the lack of correct accenting on certain names. I still haven’t figured out how to put them on words on the computer… Anyone know how?

That is some good musing there. I can't even keep the names straight yet!

I would change one and add two:

Boromir - I think Boromir is more akin to Tulkas than to Oromë. Tulkas was more of a pure fighter and did most of the 'manhandling' of Melkor himself, rather than just hunting his fell beasts.

Rangers of Arnor and Ithilien - These two groups fit my perception of Oromë. No open or warlike combat, using the stealth of the hunter as their best weapon and best defense. And a love for the land of ME, which was strong in Oromë.

Eorl - He would be also a great reflection of Oromë, not just for his battle cunning, but because of the similarity in transportation! Their horses Nahar and Felaróf were both unique steeds.

You're right, it would be easy to go and on!
