I'm a big Tolkien fan ( no really ) and I'd love to learn Elvish, but where can I learn it?

Welcome to the Downs Finwe-89!

Here are a few threads on the topic, (which you can find by using the search function): Learning Elvish. I suppose though, that the best source you can use for learning Elvish or familiarize yourself with the languages of Middle-earth is Ardalambion, which provides wordlists, grammar etc.

Hope you enjoy yourself here!

Hm, that's odd...

Anyway, here are a few links, or threads, with the same topic on the Barrowdowns:

Learning Elvish
Elvish Languages
Another Learn Elvish.

Anyhow, all the threads are referring to Ardalambion. If you scroll down just a bit on the front page (Ardalambion), you'll see that the different languages are listed. Quenya and Sindarin are the most complete (correct me if I am wrong anyone) elven languages; there is even a Quenya Course (Just press this link, or the link on the site).

I hope that was somewhat helpful.

1420!

It just depends whether you want to learn the Elvish languages Tolkien created (Quenya, Sindarin), or just some Elvish junk that someone else made up. Nov's, posted the threads down however.

I will recommend Ruth S. Noel's book The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-earth. It deals with all 14 languages Tolkien created.

Ai, suilad a mae govannen, Finwe! Anirach ista Edhellen?

Oh, and welcome to the Barrow-Downs, too.

Well, here are some very nice-and-useful sites for the beginning Elven scholar:

~Ardalambion, as has been stated above.
~The Fellowship of the Word-Smiths; a lovely site with info on Quenya, Sindarin, and the Tengwar alphabet.
~Sindarin Dictionary; if it is Sindarin you are interested in, this place has downloads of a dictionary and a search option (only 800 hits are allowed total each day, however).
~Quenya Names; just for fun, you can look up your name and find the Quenyan translation.

Also at Council of Elrond (lurvely site) there is a Sindarin course based on the text at Ardalambion; it's very useful and I recommend you check it out. Have fun!

I'll link here a Quenya course from Ardalambion. If you're into Quenya, the course is probably the best way to learn the language. It's long but thorough-going and additional exercises help you to understand the grammar. I've studied only the first three "lessons" of it but I can really recommend it. You might want to check the old threads as well. Good luck!

Actually, I would not recommend that book by Ruth S. Noel. I've heard it isn't so correct in everything. Ardalambion is the best source I know of.

And personally I think Sindarin is much harder to learn than Quenya.

Welcome to the Downs, Finwe-89! Hope you enjoy being dead!
As the elvish languages are made up, you cannot become fluent in them.
I enjoy www.councilofelrond.com. They have phrases and such that you can memorize. Fun stuff!

Welcome to the 'Downs, lotrknight! As for "doing it right", to what do you refer?

On topic (or at least slightly), I like the Council of Elrond's Elvish tutorial whatcha-ma-call-it. Thing.

Very Pippinesque.

Yes yes. Blasted alter-ego.....

Thumbs up

That Council of Elrond thing was LOVELY!
And I can really recommend The Quenya Course of Ardalambion - it's great and you learn very much. It's also very easy to understand - even for me nad I'm not a native english-speaker!
btw - it's so funny how difficult it is for you english-speakers to pronounce elvish - it's usually so easy for me as a finnish-speaker. Hail Tolkien!

Not entirely true. Tolkien didn't just "make it up", it was well structured just like any modern language today. The fact that Tolkien was only one man meant he couldn't make an entire dictionary of words in one lifetime. But in what elvish does exist we can still become fluent. We can probably have general convresations with it.

Btw, Ardalambion rocks! It is the best site ever for learning elvish and everything about Tolkien's languages!! I'm going very steady, I'm only learning basic pronounciation at the moment...it's so much fun!!!

Hehehehe i suppose so dragon reborn... you are right about two things. firstly Tolkien didn't leave a dictionary behind and secondly pronouncation is very much of fun (indeedy-doo) its easier for me though because i know a bit of french and i had to practice saying circumflexes and diresses and accents like acute and grav and in my language sounds are similar...

Ring Here is a lovely site...

There is a wonderful site where I learned most of my sindarin.
Taramiluiel Home

This site features a HUGE Sindarin phrasebook, as well as MANY, MANY songs translated into Sindarin. My signature was written by her. It's a great site, you really should try it.
