Has anyone else noticed similarities between The Lord of the Rings and Babylon 5?

I've never seen B5. What is it and what are the similarities?

Re: B5 vs Lotr?

Could you site some examples. I have seen it before, but I do not remember any real good examples. Hmm, that old guy that said he was the first could be Bombadil, the guys wearing masks and stuff, vorlons?, could be maiar and the people with bone sticking out of their heads would be I guess elves. I don't really know much more than that. A more indepth look could be taken on this subject.

Babylon 5

I've never seen Babylon 5, but I always assumed it to be a Star Trek clone. Judging by what I've seen of Star Trek (two movies and a really old episode at 5 in the morning) I can't see any similarities. Then again that opinion doesn't matter because I haven't seen the show in question. Which begs the question why I am posting. Still, I never thought a new age sci-fi Star Trek clone like B5 would hold any similarities with a fantasy/mythology type world like Tolkien's. Still, I am probably wrong. Hmm.

Re: Babylon 5

I love Babylon 5, and I do not think it is a Star Trek clone either *Sticks tongue out at enep*

I do not believe there are many similiarities but I am sure some Races or Events could be thought related.

Well the "First Ones" excluding the Shadows could be the Ainur. The Minbari could be the Elves, the Centauri were 'manipulated' by the Shadows so they could be corrupted wild men. (hehe) The Anla'shok would be Dunedain, the Shadows would be Sauron and his forces. There are alot of other possibilities too, but the two story-lines are nothing alike.

Re: Welcome!

Babylon 5 is in the 2500's/2600's, Earth is United and they make contact with alien races, and a little mishap happened with the Minbari and it started the Earth/Minbari War which ended at the Battle of the Line where the Minbari were about to break through and 'conquer' earth but they mysteriously stopped *Doesn't go into details* So Earth starts the Babylon project to try and keep peace in the Galaxy.

Examples

B5 is a sci-fi show which ran for about 5 years on the United Paramont Networks. It unlike most other sci-fi shows had an epic story line and had very good writers.
I will site numerous similarites but to fully appriciate them you really would have had to have seen the show:

Ainur=First ones

Minbari=elves

Delen&Sharadon=Aragorn&Arwen

Sharadin's fall into the pit of Zhadumn=Gandalf's fall into the pit of Khaz

Re: Examples

Wow, it's been so long since I saw Babylon 5--even before my LOTR obsession. The only thing I remember very well is the episode about the "living ship" belonging to that mysterious race I don't know the name of. It reminded me of Anne McCaffrey's the Ship That Sang series (especially when the last line was "The ship...it sang to me" ). But that has little to do w/LOTR. But hey, I like B5 and I was sad when they shoved it onto cable (which I don't have).

The days are fated to be filled with marvels.

H-I, I guess those are the minbari. and that first 1st one would be a better Bombadil than an Iluvatar.

B5? Uh...

Ah...Hmm. As you can tell, Impaler (btw, Welcome to the board) I have never seen an episode of B5. And if it isn't a Star Trek clone then it would have to be better. And anything that is compared to Tolkien has to be good TLW, Congrats on 200 posts!

The First Ones are a group of the eldest races, each group could represent one of the Valar.

Thanks, I have been looking over this board for along while (bout a month) and finally decided to get me a local account.

You should watch Babylon 5, it has re-runs on Sci Fi channel weekdays around 6-8 (dont remember) In my own opinion it is better and more realistic than Star Trek, but I guess thats because Star Trek is more into the future than B5.

And Kosh would be more like a Gandalf if you ask me.

I wouldn't just yet

Actually it might not be such a good idea to watch reruns on sci-fi right now. The reason is now they are showing the last season when TNT took over. Sufice it to say TNT destroyed it( in my opinion ) when it should have ended after the earth civil war. So if you want to get a feel for the real B5 wait a month or two until they start the first season again and don't just watch 1 or 3 or 5.

Hmm

I don't often get the chance to watch old re-runs, I couldn't ever be bothered staying up that late...and I don't think B5 is even running on air in Australia. Sci-Fi Channel must be an American Cable thing

Heh sorry to drag out this old topic but I was just cruising the old posts and came across this one.

Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5's creator) is a big fan of Tolkien and states so in some of his interviews.

Tolkien

A less known similarity is that a lot of names (i don't know if they're place names or what, never actually noticed them myself) are taken from Khuzdul, Tolkien's invented language for the dwarves.
