Pedant
BD Press Release
Professor Fordim Hedgethistle, BA MA PhD today announced the launch of the Barrow Down's first Non Governmental Organisation: PEster Davem for A New Title (PEDANT). Prof Hedgethistle told those present that he had learned from "an extremely reliable source" that davem has recieved an offer of a personal title, but that he has -- as yet -- not take up the option of submitting one to the Wight. Prof Hedgethistle went on to say that he, along with "many other concerned Downers" felt that davem's lack of a title made little sense given his current standing in the reputation rankings, and in particular, given his "remarkable ability to stimulate intelligent discussion in a variety of threads." Downers who are concerned about davem's lack of a personal title should post their concerns in this thread, in the hopes that grass roots support can move davem to action. Any Downers with suggested titles for davem can post them here as well. Prof Hedgethistle concluded the press conference with an appeal to the Wight not to close this thread or to take any kind of punitive action against the progenitor of this thread, or any of its participants. When taking questions from reporters, Prof Hedgethistle confirmed that PEDANT is an unauthorised lobby, neither supported nor endorsed by davem, but he hoped that davem would not mind the foundation of the NGO. |

Muttering hobbit sits in back of thread, not very well hidden by it.
"davem ... maved. Nothing jumps out at me there. But sideways, medav... madev... hmm. Mad what? Mad v.. v... nothing. Just like no avatar; perhaps something about being mad and faceless. The Mad Mask? The Mad Masked ... hmmm. The Face of Madness. Mask of Madness?" Hobbit continues muttering, angling to be better hidden by the dangling thread from the PENDANTish professor. |

Mithalwen sneaks in late as usual, bag overflowing and spilling books and pens but not a drop of coffee... knowing profs have a tendancy to make the back row move to the front, she takes a obscure place just far enough from the back and next to the window.... she too attempts anagrams for inspiration ......... ademv.... hmmm Archer of Agincourt....

*Esty opens the door to peek in and says in a stage whisper, "Hey, did you see? He's at least got an avatar now! There is yet hope!"

Evisse puts on some glasses and peers closely at Exhibit A, that is, davem's avatar.
Trying to hide the fact that she has no idea what the avatar is supposed to represent, she studies it attentively for a couple of seconds, muttering: "Interesting...yes, quite interesting". Then, being in the mood of a controversy, she began, in a solemn voice: "But I ask you, my fellow Downers, although I'm not in doubt of your good intentions, I'm slightly taken aback by your verocious attack on one of us, so to speak, for the base purpose of his getting a personal title, or should I say, be caged by the two (or three at most) words that usually constitute a personal titles here on the Downs? And for what immediate purpose? Solely for the sake of your viewing and chatting pleasure, is that not right? So that afterwards you may praise its wit, its careful choice of wording, its appropriateness, and then, after a while, completely forget about it and ignore it, in the mass of personal title that has come to crowd our barrow, or become so accustomed to it, as to refer to our complex, controversial, multi-layered and considerably intelligent poster, not as he wants to be known (that is, davem, which is his name, after all), but as, say, Loremaster of the Seventh Age, or Oversized Hobbit Wanderer, or God knows what else, maybe even Lord of the Rings." *fearful gasps interrupted her speech, when she dared to utter the unutterable* During the noisy debates that followed, she tiptoed outside, leaving her speech unfinished.

That avatar rocks. Totally.
And if the rest of us had to work so hard for our avatars, there would be fewer of them. (insert anti-MAC tirade here) ....nah, nevermind. Two trees, silmarils, sun&moon... and is that Meneltarma? No, of course not. Silly me. It's that valinorish mountain that Manwe's throne is on. Yeah, yeah, that one, the one called... gmph.... >>_<< Gah. Somebody help me. Everwhite. Mount Everwhite. What's the elvish name??

Yes, Esty! You do indeed-- naturally, davem is dq'ed despite his dizzying didactics-- pending pronouncement of his personal title.
Of course you COULD ask the quiz question, What Should Davem's Personal Title Be...

But, forgive my ignorance, what is an Ulairi?
Congratulations, davem! Though I'm not quite sure what it means, it's a lovely title.

According to the Quenya to English wordlists from the Ardalambion site, the singular is possibly:
Úlairë or Úlair Congrats to you! ~*~ Pio

I knew that davem of all people would not hold out against our 'canon' rules concerning Personal Titles for long, although I did enjoy his nonconformity for however brief it was.
And right, HI a dark and winding one it is. I cannot say which I enjoy more: the thought of davem being an iconoclast, or his new title. It trips lightly and lyrically off the tongue, davem. Nicely done indeed. *goes off to delete that post from Bilbo S. Thompson on the news entry in response to Fordim's scrum*

Well I guess PEDANT will now have to be disbanded .... a short lived but effective NGO ......... And I thought it might be a second Jarndyce v. Jarndyce and Jarndyce....

This was the fastest case of pressure from the people accomplishing something since GDR people spent their Monday evenings chanting, "Wir sind das Volk"!

Finally! I had anticipated davem's being a Ghost Prince and expected that as soon as he becomes one, he shall have a personal title.
But why so dark a title, I wonder? And about the plural thing, I guess it would be quite appropriate, considering the depth and range of his thought equals that of many ordinary people combined! |

Yes, I also wondered why so dark a title. But it's very melodic, it's meant to be an assonance, right? You can't change it to Ulair without destroying a bit of that rhythm. Maybe this will persuade you :

I know! But now you see what happens when you rush me. It's all very well demanding people to be hasty, but trouble always comes of it |
