Question I'm confused..

In reading many Silmarillion fanfictions, the Sons of Feanor have many nicknames (& I don't just mean Maedhros' "Russandol")-- but how does one go about figuring these things out? They arn't mentioned in The Silmarillion.

I was just wondering if anyone knew.

Well... I'm pretty sure this isn't the right place for this thread. But I think you would have to guess.

The Barrow-Wight is a guest of Tom Bombadil.
White-Hand

Fan Fiction nicknames are invented by the authors, so I don't know how you could possibly keep track of them or why you would want to. When writers choose to give unneccesary monikers to well-established characters, I typically choose to read another story. If the names aren't mentioned in the Silmarillion or other JRRT texts, I guess you'll have to ask the writer or take NightKnight's advice and just guess. NightKnight is also correct that this topic doesn't belong in THE BOOKS. (I'm moving it to N&N)

In 'The Shibboleth of Fëanor' (found in the History of Middle-earth Vol. XII), the father's and mother's seldom-used names are listed for each of the seven (and for all of the other descendants of Finwë, if you're interested). Perhaps the fan-fiction stories you're reading include these. The father-names often related to the father or the father's ancestry (at least or especially in cases such as Finwe's royal house where all trace back to him, the first Noldorin king) while the mother-names were often prophetic, built on a "mother's sense" in knowing the destiny or character of their children at birth.

Here's the list...

Sindarin name (used in The Silmarillion), father-name, mother-name

Maedhros, Nelyafinwe (from Nelyo + Finwe), Maitimo

Maglor, Kanafinwe (Kano + Finwe), Makalaure

Celegorm, Turkafinwe (Turko + Finwe), Tyelkormo

Curufin, Kurufinwe (Kurvo + Finwe), Atarinke

Caranthir, Morifinwe (Moryo + Finwe), Carnistir

Amrod, Pityafinwe (Pityo + Finwe), Ambarto [or Umbarto*]

Amras, Telufinwe (Telvo + Finwe), Ambarussa

* There is a special legend on how the names of the twins came to be (decided).

It would certainly be more interesting to read this passage on your own straight from Tolkien [and his son], but if the volume is unavailable to you and you're still interested in more, I can give a brief meaning of each name.
