those keen-eyed geeks
I just went to see my eye doctor, gotten a new pair of glasses.... anyway, I just thought, those Middle-Earthlings must be really amazing if they don't have eye defieciencies.... those Elves, they live forever.... they must have developed eye deficiencies.... but wait.... they couldn't be assailed by illnesses. How about those Men? Wizards? They must be really that great if they don't....
They've got no electricity there... So how could they not have eye sickness? If they do, how do they treat this? ******************************** Just thinking how comical it would be to see Gandalf with glasses..... ******************************** I'm a crazy pandha... what can I do bout it? |

Repare - the spell Hermione uses to repair Harry Potter's glasses. Frodo was around wizards, right? I mean, he might have learned spell or 2

What's all this? A horrid rumor? I must squash it!
Of course elves cannot be afflicted by illnesses, but nearsightedness, however unpleasant, is not technically an illness. Therefore, there must be some unfortunate elves who go about bespectacled. And there are, myself among them. We have formed the Nearsighted Elves Society, an organization devoted to helping elves to live with thier disability. My good friend Eowyn Skywalker has courtiously extended her site to give us all a home there, and we hope to bring in new members as our Society is rather small. So, I do some shameless advertising, but the rumor has been divested of!

Not sure if this is really true, but I heard that your eyes actually adjust to looking at whatever distance you look at most. Babies are born farsighted, then their eyes adjust and about elementary school age they go a little nearsighted. Then they have a bit of trouble reading the board and before ye know it they've got glasses. Which actually can make things worse as they make everything seem closer, so your eyes have to adjust more. It's especially bad if you get a prescription that's a bit too strong. I think that's what happened to me...I got a lot of too-strong prescriptions in elementary school, and now I can't see clearly further than six inches from my nose.

Gossip alert!
There are rumours that Túrin wore glasses. He lost them at Nargothrond, and ended up not knowing that Níniel and Nienor look waaay too alike.
Don't take my word for it, though.

I don't really know how they'd deal with eye problems. I imagine Gondor would probably have the best methods, seeing how the Numenoreans were kind of obsessed with health care. Abedithon le, ~ Saphy ~

I think the Ring wraiths could "live" blind and be quite content. I mean, their purpose in life is to find the Ring at all costs, and they're drawn to it. So Nazgul probably don't need glasses to see them.

going back to elves
But elves are good with gems, and smithying, so I suppose they might have produced some type of contact lens, eh?

When elves went blind- or at least their eyesight began to fail them- they did not, in fact, get contact lenses. They would buy a weasel, train it to speak and then when training was complete they would hide it in their hair and the weasel would give a vivid and colourful description of all, which was just as good as seeing.

I have a hunch that Saruman provided the Uruk-Hai with sunscreen and UV-resistant contact lenses, giving them the ability to appear during daylight.

Túrin: My sister? You mean tall lass with long blonde hair?
Mablung: No, stupid! Your sister was a tall lass with long blonde hair! Túrin: That cripple was right! I did marry my sister! Noooooo!!!!! *stumbles on Gurthang* So much for the idea of talking swords . . .

I can imagine wizards wearing glasses like Dumbledore from Harry Potter. And I can also picture hobbits in specs. Like Bilbo, having specs would definitely add to his look.
