The Havens
Could someone please give me a good explanation as to what exactly the Havens are? I just finished reading the book and I must say that even though I thought the ending was appropriate, I wish it had ended different. And why did Frodo go to the Havens? I see why Bilbo did; he was about ready to die. But why did Frodo have to leave if the Shire was peaceful again? Any help would be great...

the Havens in the third age are on the west coast of ME where Cirdan the Shipwright dwells-boats to take the elves back across to the Immortal Shores leave from here...Frodo was weary of ME and his wound continued to pain him. He wanted peace, and Arwen gave him her place among the Eldar
I don't think I explained it very well :/

All the ring-bearers went to the havens to sail over the sea to Valinor(I believe). That is why Frodo went and later Sam went(He was a ring-bearer for a short-time). Many elves traveled as well, and is believed that Legolas and Gimli went later also.

Only in the West could Frodo be completely healed, as a Ringbearer he was allowed to go into the West, like Bilbo, and later Samwise. Arwen had given Frodo her place on the ship, but I believe that he would have been able to go without it, The necklace she gave him seemed to ease his pain somewhat. There seemed to be no joy left in Frodo after the ring was destroyed. the Grey Havens are the Harbor of Cirdan's ships in Mithlond which bear the Elves into the Undying West, Elvenhome, or Valinor they are all the same place. It is explained in The Silmarillion, which is a very good read and explains Middle Earth's beginning, the Valar, and the history of the ages that are only mentioned in LOTR.
