I can't think of any instance of Sauron using a sword, or any other personal weapon for that matter. I would think he would have against Gil-Galad and Elendil when they were laying siege to Barad-dűr, but I don't think it says so specifically. Like Morgoth, he seems to prefer using his servants and his guile to accomplich goals. Those who will defend authority against rebellion must not themselves rebel. </p>

Like in the silmarillion he just like changed in to a wolf or sent out his huge armies. If yu're a shape shifter like Sauron you don't need awepon, u can change to anything u want so i don't think he had a sword... but then again it gives u a sense of authority to hold like a sword or maybe he was especially weird and did personal executions and killed prisoners just for the heck o it. so i dunno... </p> |

Aldaron said about Sauron having Orcs, Nazgul, and Balrogs to fight for him. I don't know about Balrogs, they were fellow servants of Melkor, Sauron was really a Balrog himself. I don't think he controlled Balrogs, but maybe some had some kind of alliance with him, never know. </p> |

I mentioned this in the Books II forum - Sauron wasn't a Balrog, he was a Maiar of greater power than the Balrogs and was given greater position by Melkor. He was far more cunning and wicked than any of the wantonly destructive Balrogs. Even Gothmog, lord of balrogs, was only seen to engage in hand-to-hand combat or leading packs of evil creatures. He was never shown to have any of the leadership abilities that Sauron did. After the destruction of Beleriand the remaining Balrog(s) fled and hid, but Sauron continued to dominate the world for two more ages. I haven't seen any reference to Sauson having a weapon but that doesn't mean he didn't have one to use in need. Even Melkor had a weapon in his duel with Finrod (a hammer "Grond" wasn't it? </p> |

Against Gil-Galad and Elendil, he might have had a sword. He coulden't change his form so easily anymore, so he coulden't turn into a wolf. He would have had to rely on sheer strengh, or a sword, unless he had other powers we don't know of (which I'm sure he did <img src=tongue.gif ALT=":b"> ). <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> <font size="-2">'They have come!' he said. I always assumed Sauron killed Gil-Galad with his bare hands.
Isildur wrote"The ring misseth maybe, the heat of Sauron's hand, which was black, and yet it burned like fire, and so Gil-Galad was destroyed" It's been too long since I read The Silmarillion and I don't remember whether it says how or with what sauron killed him. But he still could certainly have wore a sword. [ September 23, 2001: Message edited by: Luthien Tinuviel ] |

Yes! Another issue that needs a stand! I choose the no-sword side of the argument, and will staunchly defend my choice with any available media. Did he need a sword? No! Would he carry around something he didn't need? I think not!
There, settled. Thank you, thank you.

Well since I am the Dark Lord himself I have to say that I used a sword. lol! Anyway back to reality, I think he used a sword for one reason. Tolkien is realistic, while this might be a dangerous thing to say since we are dealing with fantasy, he seems to be more realistic than most. I mean if swords can hurt Nazgul's why can't they hurt him. Yeah the sword broke in half when it hit him but still, it would make more since if he had a sword to block most of the shots. Here is my question, how did Sauron get just one finger cut off? That doesn't make any sense to me.
