Describe one occasion in FotR that Gandalf definitely did not have his staff in his hand.

When he drove a firework-laden cart through Bywater and Hobbiton up to Bag End before the Party, he would have needed both hands to drive the cart.

Sorry Bruce. My grandfather drove a horsecart, and he lost his arm in a sawmill when he was nine. Although I agree it is highly probable that Gandalf had laid aside his staff while in that situation, I'm looking for a time when it states positively that he had put it down. I don't know if this counts or not, but when Gandald was fighting the Balrog, it states that he smote the bridge and it cracked at the balrogs feet and the staff was broken and fell from his hand. - FotR "The Bridge of Kazad-dum"

Did gandalf not set his staff down when he meets Aragorn Legolas and Gimli on 'Fangorns Hill'?

Joy is correct. It does state at the bridge his staff fell from his hand. As far as the meeting with Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, that occurs in the Two Towers, not in FotR.
Your turn Joy. PS: there is at least one other occasion that Gandalf puts down his staff in FotR, if anyone cares to look. |

Extremely easy question here - but I can't think of anything off the top of my head at the moment.
What was being gnawed on by a troll? (I'm looking for a very specific answer)
