I thought it looked like Spain and Portugal. Unless I'm all screwed in my memory. The shape of the entire Middle Earth looks like the Spain and portugal part of Europe.

Caradhras reminds me of the Canadian rockies. I have driven up there in the winter time...it's scary.

I reminds me of Canada.. although i´ve never been there .. but didn´t Tolkien say that it´s like Europe (and that it is in the same climatic- zone)?
The landscape also remainds me of how I imagine England in older days.

Well, the geography of ME is based on Europe...Rivendel's latitude is that of Oxford.

Although, the shire reminds me a lot of New Brunswick and Caradhras reminds me of the Rockies, that is because I have travelled across Canada many times...my opinion would probably change if I did go into the states though.

Starbreeze, there is nothing wrong with being Patriotic! I am very proud to be Canadian!

Oh yeah, the climate in Canada and Britian are the same in some places. In Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Islands. Cold. Damp. Rainy. and in the summer time, Brief-Don't blink you'll miss it. And 10C is perfect summer weather for shorts and t-shirts.

The lands have changed it too much too make it compareble. Latitude wise Rivendell=Oxford and Minas Tirth=Florence.

I never thought of Canada, it does kind of look like that. Canada is very grand, and some of the Canadian Rockies look just like the misty mountains and the other places I actually remember seeing some places looking just like Rohan.

Oh totally Canada!!

But actually, I was reminded of Canada very much so in FOTR, especially the shot where Strider is leading the hobbits into the wild. It looked a lot like northern Ontario, with its thick pine trees and dense forestation. There was even some snow on the ground too!

The Rocky mountain chain could work very well as the Misty mountains, especially on the western side getting more into BC, as opposed to Alberta. Also, the plains of Rohan could also be a part of Alberta; not quite as west as the mountains, but getting into hillier areas.

The river Anduin could have been the St.Lawrence river, or another river further north. There is actually a river and waterfall in New York State that probably would have suited the story very well, although the name escapes me at the moment...and it's not in Canada haha.

Canada and Europe have very similar biomes; so even though Tolkien may have been thinking of his own country when he wrote the books, I find that they are easily applicable to Canada aswell.

Of course, New Zealand was a beautiful setting for Lord of the Rings. I think it works perfectly. PJ should definitely get some commendation for his choice of areas used to depict the places in ME.

I have to admit I haven't seen the world outside of Europe yet (that is: since the time i left Eresseä )but I always thought that ME resembles Eastern Europe a lot. this part of Europe has a more continental climate - hot summers, chilly winters - and some parts are still more or less wild, like the woods around Prague and the lesser known valleys of the Alps. but you have to know where to find them!!

just for the record: the place where I have settled down is WESTERN Europe, so I'm not...
well you know what I mean.
