Ring

Now here is the Ring poem in Russian. Just hope the lettering will stay correct

Три - эльфийским Владыкам в подзвездный предел;

Can anyone read this?

Am I really the only Norwegian at the Downs? Well, anyway, here is the Norwegian version (I don't have the norwegian letters on my keabord so the Norwegian version is not fully correct).

Tre Ringer for alvene under det blaa;
(Three rings for the elves under the blue)
sju er for dvergene i saler av sten;
(seven is for the dwarfs in halls of stone)
ni for menn som all kjodets gang ma gaa.
(nine is for men who must go the mortal way)
Men for Morkets Herre en eneste e้n
(but for the Dark Lord one and only one)
i det dunkle Mordor hvor skyggene raar.
(In the gloomy Mordor where shadows rules)
(one ring shall gather them, one ring to find them)
(one ring to rule them and in the darkness bind them)
i det dunkle Mordor hvor skyggene raar
(In the gloomy Mordor where shadows rules)

Akhtene - I think Kalimac and Lush can read Cyrillic, but I'm stumped!

Can you write it phonetically in the Latin alphabet?

Hooray, someone posted the German version, so I'm going to try that one (I got most of the French on too, and will have to give the Spanish one to my mum, to see if she can understand it ) I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a dictionary, so I may have to use a dodgy on-line translator, if so, please forgive any strange translations!

Drei Ringe den Elbenkönigen hoch im Licht,
Three rings for the elf-kings high in the light,

Seven for the dwarves-rulers in their halls made out of stone,

Den Sterblichen ewig dem Tode verfallen, neun,
The mortal ones eternally urged by the death (???), nine,

Einer dem dunklen Herrn auf dunklem Thron
One for the dark lord on his dark throne

Im Lande Mordor wo die Schatten drohn.
In the land of Mordor where the shades drone (???)

One ring, them to farmhands (???!!!! Sorry, on-line translator!), them all to find,

In the darkness to float (???!!!) and eternally bind them

Im Lande Mordor wo die Schatten drohn
In the land of Mordor where the shades drone.

Sorry, I may wish to revise this when I find my dictionary!

Nevtalathiel, you did a pretty good job translating the German poem! Here are the missing links:

verfallen: declined, decayed or fallen (to death)

drohn (correct - drohen): to threaten

knechten: to make them servants

treiben - to drive (them into)

Hope that helps to make more sense!

Estelyn, you are from Germany? Then it is no wonder we are related, since I live in Denmark, just a few miles from the german border. Do you live in the northern part of Germany (Schleswig-Holstein)?

Ring

Priviet vsem! (Hi everyone )
Uph, have never tried using Latin letters for Russian words before. Worth a try?

Tre - elfiyskim vladykam v podzvyozdnyi predel
(Three - for elven lords in under-stars (?) realm)
Sem' - dlya gnomov tsaryashchikh v podzemnom prostorie
(Seven - for dwarves ruling in undergroung space)
Devyat' - smertnym chei vyveren srok ee oodel
(Nine - for the mortals whose life-span and doom has been measured)
Ee Odno - Vlastelinu na tyomnom pristolie
(And One - for the Lord on the dark throne)
V Mordorie gde vekovechnaya t'ma
(In Mordor where eternal darkness is)
Shtoby vsekh atyskat', vayedina sazvat'
(To find all, call together)
Ee yedinayu chornayu volei skavat'
(And bind by single black will)
V Mordorie gde vekovechnaya t'ma
(In Mordor where eternal darkness is)

Hope it will make sense this time. It really took longer than to type a long post in any
one language.

And here is the Dutch version:

Drie ringen voor de Elfenkoningen op aard,

Zeven voor de Dwergvorsten in hun zalen schoon,

Negen voor de Mensen die de dood niet spaart,

Eén voor de Zwarte Heerser op zijn zwarte troon,

In Mordor, waar de schimmen zijn.

Eén Ring om allen te regeren, Eén Ring op hen te vinden, Eén ring die hen brengen zal en in duisternis binden, In Mordor, waar de schimmen zijn.

That's it, great hu? Now where did I leave my Mustard??

In Finnish:

Kolme sormusta haltiakuninkaille alla auringon
(Three rings for the elven kings under the sun)
Seitsemän kääpiöruhtinaille kivisaleissaan
(seven for the dwarf-lords in their halls of stone)
Yhdeksän ihmisille, jotka vie tuoni armoton
(Nine for men who will be taken by merciless death )
Yksi mustalle ruhtinaalle valtaistuimellaan
(One for the Dark Lord on his throne)
Maassa Mordorin joka varjojen saartama on
(In the land of Mordor, that is surrounded by shadows)
Se yksi sormus löytää heidät, se yksi heitä hallitsee
( that one ring will find them, that One will rule them)
(that One will doom them into the night and chain them to darkness)

As you see, the English text is word-to-word translation, the italics are the parts differing from the original

after all my tribulations and search i could not get ahold of the whole poem but here is the "one ring to rule them all..." part and it is all right.

Einn hringur rćđur ţeim öllum.
(one ring rules them all)
Einn skal hann hinna finna.
(One shall he [it] the others find)
(one shall he [it] collect them all and in his entrapment (?) spin.)

I shall try to get the rest .

One thing more is that it has similar words in Malaysian like "langit" and "singsing-cincin". Also, you will see Spanish words in there like "para" and "mortal." Our language was strongly influenced by the Spaniards of the 17th-19th century.

Another thing, I did not major in Filipino so I do not claim that what I did was entirely accurate(in syntax and in rhyme) but this I know I've translated in a language known to us Filipinos.

No offense meant, Melephelwen.... okay? But
(...saying this in a very calm voice...)
Don't you know your native tongue well enough to translate any sentence from English?
(...still finishing with a calm voice...)
I really don't mean any offense. Just making sure.

*blushes* didn't realize it sounded like that... oops...
Of course I can, what I meant was that I'm not able to translate a whole poem like the RP and still making it sound okay (admit it, I don't know how it sound with fillipinian ... er, whatever it's called) My point is, I'm not impressed of the translation, but of the poem.
And another thing, it's nearly impossible to make anything sound good in Danish, so I musty answer yes to your question!
Hope I made sence, (cuz I don't think so!)

OK... Here's the romanian version. I don't like how they translated it, but anyway... Because of the keyboard, i woun't be able to write all the words correct... like the sounds "sh"... All the poems from LotR are translated so as to rhyme... I'm so angry!!! You'll understand me when you'll see the translation back in english.

Here it goes...:

(Three rings for the elf-lords under the sun)
(Seven for them, the dwarfs from halls of stone)
(Nine to men who know that in their world is death --> i really don't know how to translate this... to be accurate)
(One for him, the Dark-Lord in his deep night)
Unde-s umbrele in Tinutul Mordor, ca sa le gaseasca.
(Where are the shadows in the Land of Mordor, to find them)
(And to gather all these one ring, and no other)
(To bind them, and so to possess them)
Unde-s Umbrele, in Tinutul Mordor, in intunecime.
(Where the shadows are, in the Land of Mordor, in darkness)

What do you think?

Here it is in Italian....I got it off of an online translator so feel free to correct anything wrong....

That Filipino translation is pretty - so sing-songy and bouncy. I like it.

I am familiar with a bit of Alsatian, Spanish and old Latin, but not enough to accurately translate the poem.

Well, I'm glad someone's interested in the Filipino version. And yes, I was kinda expecting a reaction that says points out it's "sing-songy" character.

And for Melephelwen: ahhhh...ok...i get it.

Btw, I have a Sindarin translation of the ring poem. I got it in a website somewhere. Although I think you guys already have it, just tell me to post it and I will.

The russian is really cool! I actually expected a much worse version...(I wanted to buy the complete LOTR AND Hobbit AND Silmarillion all in one book in Russian, but my mum wouldn't let me...

It was actually surprisingly light, but I'm straying from the point...

The Ring Poem in Bulgarian

First of all, as this is my first post here, I would like to express my sincere excitement about my "finding" - the forum. I haven't wandered around the topics yet but I think I'll have to take my time and do so very soon. However, what led me to this pages is a search for the Latin translation of the ring poem. I found this certain topic and though I'd already found what I'd been looking for, what stands on this site definately caught my attention.
Now, here is the Bulgarian version of the Ring Poem, translated and adapted by Lyubomir Nikolov.

[Three rings for the elven kings under this sky]
[and seven for the dwarves in their halls of stone]
[let people with their mortal life take nine]
[one - for the Morose lord with throne of black flame]
[in his land Mordor where darkness lies]

[One and only ring rules them]
[One and only it will find/discover them]
[One and only it will collect them]
[and will wrap them in darkness]
[in his land Mordor where darkness lies]

Transliteration:

v stranata mu Mordor, kădeto tegne mrak.

Edinstven Păsten gi vladee,
edinstven toj šte gi otkrie,
edinstven toj šte gi sbere
i v tămnina šte gi obvie
v stranata mu Mordor, kădeto tegne vechen mrak.

So, I hope you'll find it interesting.

Rumil has been trapped in the Barrow!
Eye Lost In Translation ;-)

Just for a giggle, I thought I'd put the versions above back through online translation (Babelfish)

German-

Three rings the Elbe kings highly in the light,
Seven the dwarf rulers into their resounding from stone,
which mortal ones purge eternally to death, nine,
The dark gentleman on dark throne
In the country Mordor where the shade drone.
A ring, it to farmhands to find it all,
To float and eternally bind in the darkness
In the country Mordor where the shade drone.

Esty, are there Teleri Swan-ships along the Elbe river? We must know!

Italian-
Three rings for the Elven-king under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-gentleman in their corridors of the stone,
Nine for the mortal men have condemned them to die,
One for the dark gentleman on dark its throne
In the earth of Mordor in which the shadows they are found.
A ring in order to regulate it all,
a ring in order to find them,
a ring in order to carry it all
And in the nerezza them alloy
In the earth of Mordor in which the shadows they are found.

Not too bad!

Dutch-
Three rings for the eleven kings on nature,
Seven for the dwarf frosts in their rooms clean,
Nine for people whom death does not save,
One for the black dominator on its black throne,
In Mordor, where the schimmen are.
One rings to govern all,
one rings on them
one rings which bring to find, them and in darkness will bind,
in Mordor, where the schimmen are.

Dutch dwarves are obviously tidy folk!

I've been looking for Filipinos here for a very long time now. Anyway I made a variation of this, though many years too late:

Tatlong singsing para sa mga Hari ng mga Diwata, sa ilalim ng kalangitan
(Three rings for the Elven-Kings under the sky; kalangitan means sky, langit heaven)

(Seven for the Lords of the Dwarves in their stone halls, or halls of stone)

(Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die)

(One for the Lord of Darkness in his dark Throne)

(In the land/country of Mordor, resting-place of the Shadows.)

Isang Singsing, mamumuno sa lahat
(One Ring to rule them all)

Isang Singsing, hahanap sa kanila
(One Ring to find them)

Isang Singsing na titipon sa kanila
(One Ring to bring them all)

At sa kadilima'y igagapos sila.
(And in the darkness, bind them. "Igapos," to have tied, bound, usually requires an object with which to tie the other object which you've bound. )

Would you settle for a swan pedal boat on a lake in Münster? This one is especially memorable because a real black swan thought it was its partner for a long time.

Rumil, those translations are hilarious! To think that cabbage soup has a place in the Legendarium - Sam and his Gaffer would be delighted!

I am amused over the fact that Sauron is considered a gentleman - except in Holland, where he is a dominator!

Rumil has been trapped in the Barrow!

Cool pedallo Esty,

poor old black swan though (I suppose its a long way from New Zealand/ Mirkwood).

The German, er... retrotranslation (?) nearly gives away the whole plot with 'A ring, it to farmhands to find it all' - pretty close to Sam the gardner I think.

It is unique that cabbage soup,
Is unique cabbage soup.

This is a cool thread and shouldn't be buried.

Here's a (by no means perfect) translation from Hungarian back into English.

Let three Rings shine on the elf kings' hands,
Let seven go to the dwarf lords, whose houses are ornamented stone,
Let light glint on the nine on mortal men's fingers,
Let one be worn by the Dark Lord, steering a flock of servants
in the night-black land of Mordor, on fields of thick shadows.
One Ring is above all, One Ring is ruthless,
One shuts into darkness, a fetter is the One,
In the night-black land of Mordor, on fields of thick shadows.

I also like how they all are gentlemen in Babelfish-Italian.
