What about Fili and Kili? They were two dwarves that went along with Bilbo on his adventures. I thought they had the coolest names. And to all you Beorn lovers out there; Beorn is my father's favorite character, followed, strangley enough, by Legolas. My daddy's a Leggybopper...

And what of the Mouth of Sauron? Now there's a guy who knows how to make an entrance! He may not have been the most courageous emissary in Middle Earth, but he was certainly the most narcissistic!

But ya know? You have to feel sorry for the less fortunate among Sauron's minions. I mean, what would you have to have done to earn the monicker The Mouth of Sauron in the first place? Be Irish? The mind reels at the possibilitites....The Lower Intestine of Sauron...The Uvula of Sauron...The Coccyx of Sauron. The list goes on. What about Lotho, Otho, and Bill Ferny. Then what about Harry Goatleaf? There's also Khamul the Black Easterling, second in rank to the Witch-king. He was the one the little hobbits first saw in the Shire.

Yay, I'm glad someone besides me wants to remember Fili & Kili, who died defending Thorin with shield and body, for he was their mother's brother.

And what about Thorin himself? If he hadn't been so determined to avenge Erebor, the end of the books would have been quite different! "Night in Rivendell...no Queen in Gondor", according to Gandalf.

Then there's always Theoden's loyal captain, Hama! Poor soul, he died at Helm's deep, and what does he get for it? One line in TTT.

Also in TTT, Mablung and his friend whose name I forget, who are archers in Faramir's (the REAL Faramir, mind you) band in Ithilien.

Last but not least, The Real Faramir!!!

Does NO ONE remember Túrin? That brave man (he should have been an Elf!) who defeated Glaurung the Worm! Bow down to Túrin! He's my fave Silmarillion character! Then Manwé.

What about the Barrow Wights? They don't seem to be remembered that much! Except on this site.

And Aldarion? Helloh! He was the king of Númenor! The Mariner!

What about Oropher? Until Unfinished Tales, I didn't even know he existed! Legolas' grandfather!

(Not really a person, but nonetheless forgotten) ... NINNYHAMMERS!

And what of Bifur, Bofur and Bombur?

And Tevildo, who was a precursor to Sauron but nonetheless creepy.

Celebrimbor! Forger of the Great Rings!

FINARFIN! My favorite elf. Cool name, too.

Falco Boffin, anyone? One of Frodo's friends, but MENTIONED ONLY ONCE?

Sancho Proudfoot, the Tussler of the Cellars?

You all may be gone, but you are most definitely not forgotten!

1420!

Ioreth's been mentioned, but what about her kinswoman who was with her when the newly victorious King entered the city? Not only did this kinswoman provide Ioreth with an excuse for gossip (thus giving comic relief to the reader when it was sorely needed) she also managed somehow to refrain from telling Ioreth to just be quiet already! Considering that she doesn't even have her own name, Ioreth's kinswoman held her own pretty well, I would say.

I am glad a few people have talked about Bard. I was just reading about him, and he is really important, but sadly forgotten much of the time. So, just to honor this very valiant charater: Three Cheers for Bard!!! Yey, Yey, Yey!

And a know a couple people have brought up Radagast the Brown, but what about the other wizards who will forever remain nameless! They are probably the most forgotten of all.

Some of these people are hardly forgotten. I mean, I mean, Huan, Turin and Finarfin? You'd have to have no memory to forget them!

I am angered that Daddy Twofoot is often forgotten - The Gamgee's neighbor and only other family on Bag End.

I second the shout for Robin Smallburrows. Yay cock-Robin!

And another cheer for Fili and Kili, why did they have to die?

I also feel that Otho is a very over looked character, Lobelia and Lotho are remembered often, but not Otho, just because he died before the main story began...

Harding, Guthlaf, Dunhere, Doerwine, Grimbold, Herefara, Herubrand, Horn, Fastred, Hirluin the Fair, Forlong the old, Derufin and Duilin. We mustn't forget these, they even have their own song so they would not be forgotten. They gave their lives on the Pelennor fields and for that they should be remembered.

Last but not least, I don't feel Snowmane gets quite the recognition he deserves. He bore his master quickly and without fear until, of course, he fell on his master and crushed him to death, but that wasn't his fault!

Indeed Tom Bombadil! So often skipped over. He's certainly one of the most interesting characters.
Guy who be short, if you saw my class...I think they would probably put 'Pippin' on the always forgotten list. 'We've read the books' indeed. I never thought Imrahil was forgotten but only my best friend even seemed to know he was a character at all.

Please understand I have nothing whatsoever against people who have not read the books. I believe only that if you say you have read the books, you should have read them

I don't agree with the whole Bombadil's forgotten thing. He's rarely forgotten by people who have read the book because there's so much controversy about him and he's not forgotten by movie goers because they never knew about him in the first place.

Pippin forgotten? That's truely terrible! I'd need a really bad case of amnesia before I forgot Pippin.

Tolkien has such lovely minor characters in LotR. My personal favourite is definitely Gildor. Háma and Erkenbrand are wonderful too. As for people only briefly mentioned, I always wanted to know more about Malbeth the Seer and the old man at the door of the Paths of the Dead!

Ha! The old man, indeed, he's creepy.

My preferences about minor characters have changed during the years.

Of course, the minor characters I like I don't consider "minor". But if I were to say some really minor guys (mentioned in only a few sentences or having one or two lines in the whole story) whom I really like and whom even I consider minor, who occurs to me first is Lugdush. I think he must be cool.

And if we move to those whom I don't consider minor, but whom I think some people might (how dare they!), there will definitely be Gorbag, the one and only metaphysical philosopher of the Orcs, and of course Uglúk, who in my opinion cannot be considered a minor character in any case, because there is simply a whole chapter only about him!

From the more First-Age-type people, Aerin is definitely there.

I am sure I could think of more, but right now I am thinking in one limited circle, maybe later something will remind me of a different kind of people...

And speaking of Arien, what about Tilion? And another first age character that is often forgotten is Aerin.
Ugluk is my favoutire orc, and he definitely is not that "minor". Gorbag is definitely "the one and only metaphysical philosopher of the Orcs", and that's saying something! And Gothmog is often forgotten as well - not the first age balrog, the 3rd age "vice captain".

I always thought Halbarad got a raw deal. And the other Dunedain that rode with Aragorn didn't even get mentioned by name!

I agree! Halbarad, along with the other unnamed Dunedain were my favorites (just because I love the Dunedain and their history )!

As someone has already mentioned too, Elladan and Elrohir. In my opinion, they may have been rarely seen in the books, but when they are Tolkien speaks highly of them. So I suppose everyone considers them minor since we hardly see them, but in my mind they're not! They're actually my two most favorite characters from the series itself, their father coming in second.

Haldir was minor in the books, but not so much in the movies, as we all have seen. While I appreciate PJ making him a little more important in the movies...even if he did have to kill him *grumbles*...I prefer the Haldir from the books, his personality appealed more to me.

Gildor Inglorion. He saved the hobbits, simply by him and his company walking through the woods, singing (If memory serves me correctly)! Gildor sent word out for the others to be on the lookout for the hobbits. Had it not been for him, maybe Tom or Aragorn wouldn't have found them! And surely Lord Glorfindel wouldn't have known about them either. Well, he may have given Lord Elrond has the gift of foresight...but I digress. The point is, Gildor is just as important as any of the others!

Asfaloth. Hey, I'm horse crazy I would have loved to have seen more of Asfaloth!

There's no doubt more to list, but I haven't the time to list all of them!

I so agree about Halbarad, Elladan, and Elrohir!
And just to add to the horse list, Roheryn, Arod, Hasufel, Nahar, and Rochallor, Snowmane, Stybba, Bill, Fatty Lumpkin, Strider, Felarof, Lightfoot, Arroch, Firefoot, and Windfola.

The Orc from the movies? If it's the one from the movies(Still haven't read the book yet..), then I didn't think he was forgotten. I usually look at him as that orc that everyone knows and.. Hates.. :|

Well, here goes..

GO GOTHMOG, ORC LIEUTENANT OF MORGUL!
I didn't like him either when I first saw him. But i eventually got used to him and, by some strange, unusual twist of fate, he became one of my favorite characters from the films. Sure, he looks to boot, but he's a pretty cool character! Side Stepping that boulder. Admit it, it was cool when he did that.. When I first watched the movie at the theaters, I looked at him as being one of those things that keep bugging you.. But after watching the movie omptean gazillion times(the extended edition atleast), it started looking more like he was a somewhat important character. It's a shame not many people really like him. Although I am sure there are some that think he's cool, but won't admit it..

Also, Lurtz, though he isn't as bad as Gothmog when it comes to rememberence.. Even though his crime for killing Boromir is remembered and is loathed for it. Still, he's a pretty cool character as well(Ain't too shabby looking for an Uruk either!).

And with that, I offer them..

..

..

..

Cupcakes. ^_^
