I know this one, I know who it is, but I just can't seem to remember what his name is. He is the head god, so to speak the brother of Melkor, so if you can remember who that is, he was the head god.

The Encyclopaedia of Arda says he served Manwe (the 'head god' of whom you speak) and his spouse Varda.
But perhaps I read somewhere that he was a Maia of Lorien (that is, the home of the god of dreams in Valinor)

He was a Maia of Manwe, but a pupil of Nienna (?). Well, a pupil of one of the Valar other than Manwe.

Yes indeed, Meela, he was taught pity and patience by Nienna although he lived in Lorien. And Morgoth Bauglir, I'm sure you're not a failure, not by a long shot.
Peace

There are here also some rough tables relating the names of the Istari to the names of the Valar: Olorin to Manwë and Varda, Curumo to Aulë, Aiwendil to Yavanna, Alatar to Oromë, and Pallando also to Oromë
So Gandalf was a Maiar of Manwë, of a sort anyway. He was taught much by Nienna, including discipline.

Yavanna did not interact with Olorin all that much. Aiwendil was the pupil of Yavanna.

Hey, Gandalf may have Multiple-Personality Disorder. He could be more than one person.

Thanks
