One or many?
Since all the publicity and the release of the first film there have been many new editions of The Lord Of The Rings. Some come in one big book, and some are split into either 3, 4, 5 or 6 books. My version is from long long long ago, and is all in one book, but it is quite posh and unpractical for every day reading, if you don't want to get it ruined. If any of you have got the versions where the books are divided, could you tell me if it is any easier, or does it just break up the flow of the story and confuse you. If it is better might get a new copy which is divided into several books.

I would recommend getting a 3 book set. Any more than 3 and you would get confused. Hope that helps!

I started out with a three book set of Wal-mart paperbacks. It's worth and not confusing at all, (since I just grabbed the next one after I finished one book). I'm eagerly awaiting the release of the large print editions. Now that's a three part set I'd be very happy to own! (I'd hate to picture a large print all-in-one edition; I don't think you'd be able to lift it!)

I have the LotR in one big volume. It was a bit hard to lug it around from class to class, but a worthy burden nonetheless!

I actually enjoy the small printed books. I hate looking at Harry Potter pages where you can read a line so fast that it doesn't feel right.
And I have a three book set. Very nice if you ask me. Each one is a little over 400 pages.

I was going to go for the 7-volume set when I ordered a new edition, but heard they were cheaply made and not worth the money. But the good ol' 3-volume sets have always worked for me. It doesn't break the flow of the story, 'cause, heck, you know you're going to to go running for the next book as soon as you finish one.
I always figured the 1-volume edition would put my legs to sleep. |

Wow! Lots of advice! Thanks! So the general opinion is that 3 books are best?

I have got the one that has all of them piled into one book...I thought that one was better because there was no chance of me loosing the other books (which I have the tendancy to do) and having to either look for them or buy new ones. If your a scatter-brain like I am, then I suggest getting the all-in-one book.
But, I have a question...does the all-in-one book cut out content in order to put the book all together and in a suitable size? ~~Daegwenn

I was given the 7-book set at Christmas. (the 7th is the appendices.) Apart from the personal value it has to me (a gift from my parents, I wasn't even keen to let my sister read it!) I personally found 7 a great way to read it, as i tend to be...intimidated(!!!) by very large books...that, i think, is what put me off reading past page 3 when I was 12! The 7-book set is easier to carry about, and the print isn't as teeny as it is in some versions...thereby reducing the possibility of eyestrain But it's still the same story, isn't it! Daegwenn,
no, they don't cut stuff out, they just make the writing very small.

The one volume book is annoying to lug, I usually don't read such big books-but I was desperate to read them that I took anything that I could find. I drove the Librarian nuts and all of my teachers crazy asking them over and over again if they had it. I found Simillarian and the hobbit at the library, and volumes two and three of LOTR, but not the first one!! They told me it had been stolen and they didn't bother to replace it!
Thanks for telling me Starbreeze...I was just about ready to go out and buy all three of them because I thought that they had cut it a bit...you saved me around fourty dollars. ^.^ It would have been worth it, but I'm a student and I am always strapped for cash. ~~Daegwenn

How long is the appendix supposed to be? Mine is only about 12 pages long but from what you are saying it seems that it should be a bit longer.

I enjoy having the books separatly. I bought a set at Border's that consisted of four books, the trilogy & the hobbit. I liked having them separate, because then the task didn't seem so tedious, and getting to move on to the next book was like a fun prize for finishing the one before it! Plus, that's the way that it was published anyway - can you imagine having to wait a year or so to find out what happens?!

Well, I don't know for sure how many pages are in the appendices, but it's around fifty at least. There are several of them, though. (A, B, C, D, E, F pluse three indexes.) Your copy should have the whole thing, Samwise.

Fifty pages? Argh, oh dear, I have to get another copy. Oh well, that at least explains why, when you all talk about the appendix, you talk about things I don't know! You say there are lots of them, well I only have 1 and thats it, the one about Aragorn and Arwen.

I have the LotR in three books and the big red one. Personally, I find it more enjoyable to read out of the Red Book. Its alsoeasier if you are lookin things up: you don't have to keep switching books, its all right there. But the smaller three books are better for carrying around and reading at school, etc.

Samwise- Apparently, you've been more short changed than even I thought! I found out in an article that I was reading that the appendix to LotR should be about 104 pages! (The Arwen and Aragorn story is a section in one of the appendices, btw.)

I have the boxed three book set, which is really nice so you don't have to carry around one big book. Also I can keep them together with the box. I haven't seen any versions that are split into 5 or 6 books, but I think that would be annoying. I'm happy with my set.

I used my mom's old books when I first read LOTR. Then she bought me my own set along with The Hobbit because I was wearing her's out. You should have seen how happy I was when she brought the set home!
Good thing I have 3 separate books because they are already big enough. I've already worn out ROTK! (My mom doesn't think I take good care of my books, but she doesn't know how hard it is to put it in your backpack without bending the cover!) Lesson: 3 books is better than 1.

I read my dad's 3-volume set when I first read the trilogy. Then I got one of the newer all-in-one editions when the movie was coming out. I bought the one with the movie pic of the ringwraith on the front (it's pretty cheaply made) and I use it to write notes in and to underline things. It's kind of like my scribble note book. Then I went out and bought a nicer all-in-one set to keep in good condition. However for easy reading, especially at school or on vacation the 3-volume works well.
Just my story

I first read the LOTR in the 3-book version, which i got from various places. But i like to jump from place to place when i'm reading them now, depending on what im interested at the time. I misplace stuff all the time, and i didn't want to be switching from book to book all the time, so i bought an all-in one book that was fairly decent (it has a green cover and shows Gandalf with his staff walking alone down a path) that had samller print and was only about two inches thick-which is pretty good. i like long books anyhow, and i feel better about having it all in on spot.

The only copy I have is the all in one book. It's a nice book though, and good if you misplace things easily, but quite annoying to carry around with you.
The only things I need to take to class with me everyday is my violin, and music binder. (it's a summer orchestra camp) But I never go anywhere without a book, so lugging that huge copy of lotr is very anoying and it's hard to take care of. But it's cool to have the movie cover on it!

Yeah, I have seen the books with the movie pics on - I might get one of them - one thing is for sure, I have to get a new copy, and soon coz my dad is getting fed up with me ruining his posh copy (oops!). I think I will go for the three book set though, as you seem to suggest it is the easiest.

I've read LOTR in both the 3 volume edition and the One Volume. I personally like the one volume as it gives you a great sense of acomplishment when you finish, having said that, it is nice to be able to move on to another book knowing full well it contains the next part to one of the best stories you will ever read in your life. I've not read the seven volume set but i've seen it. I don't think i's like to read it as i read quickly so if i were to finishe during a school day i'd have to wait hours to get home to pick up the next volume.
I guess it's a personal thing and with that sum-up i conclude my post was of no help to you what-so-ever, sorry |

My first LotR book I got was the three-in-one, but it was the one with the Nazgul on the front. (I read them before the movie, but I was clueless and had no idea why the cover was like that) but then I saw a REALLY nice LotR book, again three-in-one, (ack! too expensive, but I'm a WAY obsessive fan, and I had to get it. Plus the money was burning a hole in my poket ) So I got that, so now I have two, but my nice one I don't let anyone touch. It's my preciousssssss

I have 2 three book sets. One set is in english, the other is in portuguese. I have all the books (LOTR + The Hobbit + Sil + Lost Tales) in portuguese and I only need to buy the Sil and Lost Tales in english to complete my collection.
But they are so expensive here. |
