Oh, poor Sauron...I'd give myself some kind of major nickname if I was him!

43 Bilbos? That rocks! Why couldn't my mom have named me something cool?

Awww.. Where did you find these, Harmonica? I don't care if it's a swedish site (see under my post for an explanation why, )

Poor, poor, poor Sauron! His mother must really have wished for him being called something uncommon!

I bet all those people who called their kids Gandalf went "Loads of people will use fellowship names, but they will use the ones we know well and no one will use Gandalf, Therefore I will use Gandalf" and so it came to pass that 14 Gandalfs were named. (could also have something to do with the hobbit.)

Hmm, no Faramirs? Wait until next year, I guess . As for poor Sauron (who if he lived in the US would probably have a major lawsuit in his future, though against whom I'm not sure) - were they planning to name him Lobelia if he were a girl? (I'm assuming Sauron is a boy). As for Gandalf, it's hard not to picture those babies with wispy little infant beards dangling over their bibs. Merry is fine, though - I know a few girls whose names are spelled that way.

Question: what would the absolute WORST LOTR name for a kid be? I'm thinking that Shelob and Ungoliant would be pretty high on that list, also Groin (No, not the Bored of the Rings character; he's a random ancestor listed in one of the Dwarvish family trees in the appendices).

Could you imagine naming a child Fatty? Or Gollum? What about Nazgul? Saruman? I wish I was named Arwen. Or Galadriel. Luthien wouldn't be too bad, either. Or some other elvish name! I like Elanor a lot, too!

I dont even pretend to understand Swedish, so what does this mean:

Det finns ingen eller högst fyra personer som har efternamnet Glorfindel

Det finns ingen eller högst fyra personer som har efternamnet Morgoth.

gosh...imagine being called Morgoth? Now THAT would be scary..."Morgoth-the early years"...

That translates: "There are none or at most four persons with the last name Glorfindel/Morgoth". Which means, there are probably none! Luckily (at least in Norwegian, Glorfindel doesn't sound too good, and Morgoth... I rest my case! :-).

I don't think Saruman would be a too bad name Arwen1858, that name is cool! ^_^ Hmm.... When I think of it, it really sounds like the name of a pornstar or something. EW! What am I saying! But Galadriel! That is such a beautiful name!

There are occasional people in Norway (which is a relatively small country, about 4.1 mill. norwegians) named after LotR. There was a reality-show contestant named Aragorn once. And then a guy who ran away with a young girl, he was named Gandalf Andreas or something like that. Or maybe he was Swedish, I don't remember.

Can't someone post a similar link for browsing in the US? Then there'll be a lot more hits on the names.

Morima: I don't know how many Middle-Earth names there are in the U.S., but my family holds several of them.

Beren and Luthien (the changed names of my parents)
John Curufin Boromir (that would be my brother)
Aranrúth Cuchulain Varda (that would be me, please don't rub in the fact that Cuchulain is a man's name...)
Demeter Finduilas (my sister)
Haleth
Galadriel (H and G are twins)
Guenevere Elwing (another sister and a lot of name to spell for a 7-year-old.)

And the proposed name of my brother's child to be born in 4 months: (if a boy) Maedhros or (if a girl) Niniel

Two of my cousins have the names Aragorn and Thingol.

Well, there's all the statistics I know of!

My uncle is absolutely attached to his LotR books, and he named all his children after LotR!

Melian Mallory (19)
Sarah Eowyn (15)
Katie Undomiel (13)
Eomer Christopher (6)
Dustin Dwarrowdelf (odd name...anyway, 2)

He is visiting for Thanksgiving and one of the first things he asked me was whether to name his next child, who is due in December. He said "Should it me Luthien Tinuviel, or Arwen?? What would be a good middle name for Arwen?" I was like...so confused. I think my cousin's are kind of lucky, especially Melian and Sarah. Melian's middle name is my first name, and in elvish wouldn't mallory be close to Mallorn? And Sarah's middle name is my favorite character.

Sigh. Wish my name was one of those pretty elvish ones...oh well.

Poor Sauron, my heart pities you!

Cúdae: You mean that you are officially registered with those names?

That's awesome!

My last name is dead boring (Johansen) and shared with millions of other people, so I've been determined to change it for years, but until now I haven't thought of having a LotR last name. I didn't think that was an option. But I have not found a last name I want yet either!

Maybe I should post a new thread on it. But I'm not sure if I dare (it's a bit silly), so I ask: Does anyone here have some ideas for me?

Aylwen - I think "Arwyn Elbereth" has a nice "flow" to it. Or, if it is a boy, he's more than welcome to use "Bill Pony".

Morima: Yes, I am officially registered with those three names (and my surname too which makes it very long to write out).
Some ideas for you would be any of the Hobbit surnames, but probably not Sackville-Baggins! Use someone's first name or "nickname" as a last name. For example, my aunt changed her last name to Turambar. Or, you know, go completely crazy and change your name to Morgoth or Sauron! Personally, I have always thought that Elladan would make a nice surname. But that's just me and I am kind of strange like that.

Cudae, all I can say is, I'm impressed . Maybe I should think about those names after all, just to keep my putative children from having the same names as half the other kids in their classes at school.

Aylen - I'd say Elanor or Rose for a middle name, but he might not want to mix hobbit-names with Elvish ones (though technically Elanor is Elvish - it's associated with hobbits, though).

Morima - Brandybuck, definitely. By far the best surname in Middle-Earth (or Brandagamba, if you want to be *really* intense).
