What if the Ring was thrown in the ocean?
If you remember, at the Council of Elrond they considered throwing the Ring into the sea in order to hide it. I thought about this and this scenario came to mind:
Two elves are out at sea. Elf 1: Do you think we're out far enough. Elf 2: Sure. Just get rid of it. Elf 1 throws the Ring into the sea. The ring floats gently to the bottom. For days it sits there. Until one day someone comes up to it and picks it up. Unable to figure out what the Ring is the person decides to seek help. Person: Patrick! Patrick! What is this? Patrick: I don't know Spongebob. But it's shiny. LOL! Do I watch too much Spongebob or what? [ March 06, 2003: Message edited by: Rose Cotton ]

Or we'd suddenly find ourselves ruled by an octopus. That's a thought worth a thousand nightmares.

or a shark, which would be worse, as no-one can get a ring from an enraged man-eating beast's fin.

Or an electric eel! Or a barracuda! Or an orca! Those buggers have huge teeth...
Yeah, for an electric eel: Elf 1: Grab it! It's just an eel! Elf 2: Ok. *zzzzzt* *thud*

Can anyone say Sebastian, Dark Crab Lord of Middle Earth?
(That's from the Little Mermaid for you people who don't enjoy watching the good old classic Disney cartoons)

Here's the Gollum scenario:
Gollum: "Oh my preciousss that fish looks so juicy sweet! Preciouss! Fish has teeth, preciousss big teeth!" Soon after he catches the fish. While eating, he finds The One Ring. "Preciousss! What a nice idea preciousss. Fat hobbitsss can't steal preciousss when we eat it preciousss...."

Or Ariel, that anorexic little fish girl... *ahem*, sorry 'bout that...
But yes, it would most likely be Sebastion, Dark Crab Lord. Flee, flee from the reign of the tyrant Jamaican crab! Or Scuttle (the insane seagull) 'It's mine, my own, my... dingle-hopper...' Okay, that was odd. Don't mind me. [ March 06, 2003: Message edited by: Sadbh ]

I tend to think that inivitably Patrick and Spongbob would find it, and the world would go on indifferently. Patrick and Spongbob are incoroupible! They'd just play with the "nice shiny thingamajig"

Interesting idea, Spongebob is so innocent. It would probably be like Merry or Pippin getting the ring.

Ah ha! I have just linked Disney to the Devil!
What's the new Disney cartoon coming out? Finding Nemo. Where did the ring get thrown? The Ocean. Who is Nemo? A fish. Where do fish live? In the ocean. So, we know what they're reaaaaally looking for and who's reaaaaaally looking for it. Of course, this all falls apart if Disney is not the one who is producing Finding Nemo.

Hmm... yes Rynoah, looking back on that phrase, it sounds quite odd... but it was written with the best intentions of ridiculous humor.
Yes, it is suspicious that Disney has created many characters of being evilly corrupted by an under water ring. A coincissdence? I think not! So we could have: (a) A Jamaican crab overlord. (b) An unaturally red-headed fish girl overlady. Not dark, but annoyingly cheerful. (c) A cute, corrupted fishie overlord, who is not a guppie. or: (d) A conveniently pre-evil whale overlord, with a taste for swallowing ships and not digesting them.

The paradigm splice from hell
I think I can supply a scenario that plumbs new depths of terror.
Captain Devereaux fired his revolver above the heads of that unwholesome and demented revel; but no authority could quell their blasphemous obsequies. Before our own crew could overcome them they had cast into the waves the golden ring, that cryptic talisman of nighted Mordor. Before long we subdued them, and gathered from their vessel many items of an indeterminate age and provenance. Strange idols, depicting horrors that were surely the products of deranged minds corrupted in excessive study of the Pnakotic Manuscripts, even the forbidden Necronomicon of Abdul Alhazred. One jade chimera was a figure of nightmare, its base written about with disquieting hieroglyphs that bore no relation to any alphabet known to the most esoteric of antiquaries. And upon the hellish altar where it rested was an immemorial parchment written in the same maddening letters. We heard no sense from the debased wretches who formed the vessel's crew, save one: he was of a less degraded type than his fellows, and showed some signs of education, being familiar with the Timaeus of Plato and the impenetrable Pennas Nan Goelið of the crazed Anglian Ælfwine. Many of the ravings that he spat at us were no more than the unconnected syllables of the long mad, but he spoke in triumph of the giving of a great tribute that would bring upon the earth a horror long forgotten. This he would not describe save in dark allusion: 'He has it, who has waited long; and those who once resisted him shall withstand no longer. Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.' And Harkness the anthropologist, who alone among us had blanched at the site of the idols on that ship of madness, grasped my arm as one possessed, saying: 'This thing that they have cast into the sea; this ancient relic of evil that even now is sinking to the utmost depths of the deepest ocean, is surely that Ring of which Alhazred wrote: Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk agh burzum-ishi krimpatul. But if that hideous chart can be believed, then it will come to rest among the ruins of aeon-shadowed R'lyeh itself. By nightfall, Great Cthulhu will have the One Ring!'

There would be the possibility of a REB IV in Gondor. Or perhaps something incorporated into REB III.
And I cannot see any Merisue smilie to use here. And it would be so appropriate.

Probably sharks with laser beams on their heads (as seen in Austin Powers - Goldmember) would eat it.
