Well, I found while I was also looking for LOTR stuff. I came across this website where people were talking about their elcish names and where they got them. Someone said they got theirs from a name generator at the barrow downs site, so I decided to check it out. That's how I ended up here.

I found a link on the net to the Name-generator some months ago, but when I tested it I didn't like it, and thought of the Barrow Downs as another unserious Tolkien-site.
(you shall not judge a site by the first impression ) Then, someone posted a link to this site, and I clicked at it again for some weird reason. But then I discovered that the Barrow Downs had a forum! I entered, and here I am

I am certainly an exception here!
Until last spring I had never even touched a computer!! But then, because I am such a huge Tolkien fan, my son showed me how to use the internet so I could get in touch with other Tolkien fans. I was first on a German Tolkien-site and forum (Since I live in Switzerland). The address of the Barrowdowns I actually found in a German book "Tolkien's World",(By Michael Nagula) at the end of it there was a list of the best internet addresses concerning Tolkien.

Good question!
I surfed the internet and tried to find a LotR site. I found the Barrow-Downs. First I only looked at the pictures and the quizzes, then I discovered a little-frequented forum on the site where I was member number 4 or 5. That was almost three years ago.

Is the B-D the largest Tolkien forum on the web? Hundreds have joined in the last two weeks alone! It is certainly my favourite forum.

A friend of mine kept going on and on about this place where you could find out your Middle-Earth names and such. So I went to the Barrow Downs generator and played around on it for a while before entering other sections of the site. I saw the forum and it intrigued me so much that I decided to join! There ya have it, folks.

I was searching for Lord of the Rings pictures (not from the movies) and initally found this site. I went back to it when my friends asked me if I'd checked out the forums. I am glad I did!

I was talking to my cousin about a different name generator and he said he knew were a better one was. I didn't believe him so he showed me The Barrow-Downs. I thought that the sight was totally awesome and started hanging out here eventually I stumbled onto the forum and I liked it. I've really only been in the forum for like a week. I've liked LOTR since junior high, and I met a fellow LOTR fan in high school (the phantom) and after he found this site he told me about it, so then I joined.

Hello. I first discovered Barrowdowns about a year ago when someone from the forum I normally post to (at sf-fandom) gave a link to the name generator. I added the site to my favourites, but just visited occasionally to check out other things - I didn't visit the forum. Then last December, things on my forum were getting kind of slow, so I joined up over here.
Like Redshelob, I first read the books while Tolkien was still alive, and have enjoyed them many times over the years. Must confess though, I'm here today because sf-fandom is down. (ducks)

My cousin showed me the name generator and I thought it was a very cool idea. I liked the look of the site and haunted it for a few weeks playing 'hanghobbit' pretty much every day (Dang that game's addicting...), checking out the drawings, etc. Then one day I scrolled a little too far down looking for the hanghobbit button and happened to see the beautiful little button labelled 'Forum'. Needless to say, I got hooked and here I am to stay.

I took a Children's Lit class because The Hobbit was required reading. We had to write a 'research project' and link it to something we read in class, so I wrote the history of Hobbits. While looking for any and everything about Hobbits on the web, I came to B-D. I haven't left since.
