Question Narya the Great?

Hi!

I have some questions about the ring, Narya the Great. How long did Gandalf have it? Did he possess it while the fellowship was on the quest, even back in Rivendell? Also, what are its powers? I know it controls fire, but I'm a little unclear about what that really means. Thanks for any help you can give me!

All I can find so far is that Gandalf arriced in Middle Earth c.1000 of the Third Age, and that is when Cirdan gave to him Narya. I believe he had it throughout the Fellowship, as it passed into the West with him in September 29th, 3021 of the Third Age.
Gandalf's power came from Narya, as his power was associated with fire. To me, that also makes sense as to why he could make interesting smoke shapes when he smoked his pipe

Take a look at these three threads. I skimmed the first couple posts of each and they looked like they might tell you some stuff you want to know.

Supposedly Gandalf received Narya (the elven ring of fire) from some old dude from the Grey Havens (as far as I'm concerned he's not an elf so therefore he shouldn't have it, and he STOLE it from it's rightful bearer). Narya is represented originally as a gold ring with a clear red stone set in it. It is the predominant ring on the cover of FOTR (on the version I have). But what I don't get is why the rings of Men don't have names or descriptions. And what if one or 2 of them weren't captured by sauron?

No, Cirdan gave it to him - he knew it would help Gandalf more than it was helping him run the port.

Cirdan was probably the oldest elf alive at the time (he even had a beard, I heard) and he was wise and foreseeing. He gave Narya, Ring of Fire, to Gandalf because because he forsaw that Gandalf was going to be the one to move all peaces against Sauron. The exact words of the conversation between them is in the Tale of Years before the list of the Third Age, also it might be in UT - Istari.

He still wore it while he was with the Fellowship, I think even after the Balrog-incident. But after the fall of Sauron it's powers were deminished and the Ring was of no use anymore. It dissapeared with him, when he departed for the second time from Middle-earth.

greetings,
lathspell
