If you could be any character in the Silmarillion, who would you be, and why?

Luthien - I've always been fascinated by her story. And she talks to animals, which is cool. My guy friends always tease me because I always am "the hero", the one who always does everything for herself and for everybody else, so I think Luthien would be a good character for me.

Valar-Mandos. Of course. Who argues with the Keeper of the House of the Slain?

Iluvator! JK-don't know who I would be. I like Aule and Arien, but i don't think i'd be them. Probably some nameless elf or human or hobbit wnaderer or ranger-killing orcs n' spiders n' stuff at unawares. Stupid Morgoth! slaying all those elves-makes me...ANGRY.

Oh, who I would like to be - Luthien, of course . Beautiful, brave, gets to have all sorts of adventures, and has her cake and eats it too by dying for love and then being allowed to come back and enjoy it for a good while longer.

Who I probably would be (if I could change gender) would be Aule. Good intentions, but sometimes taking an idea and running with it a little too far, and turning out something that wasn't done *quite* right.

Who I would not be if you paid me; Nienor Niniel. Nothing could be worse than hearing Ancalagon's last words.

Fëanor. Two words: Fiery spirit. And it's not so much that I'd choose to be Fëanor, but rather, that I can see myself resembling him. Not entirely, of course.

Fëanor-yeah he's cool. Had i been him, though, i wouldn't off spent so much time and energy forging a bunch of glowing gems-they look nice enough, but screwed things up in the end. I'd make a reeaally powerful sword first, THEN follow it up with the silmarils. though, with those darn balrogs, it may make no difference anyway. i also like fiery spirits too-though it is wise to temper it with cool wit.

How about "Random Elfmaid Servant to Melian"? I think being Melian or any of the major characters would only cause sorrow. I'd like to either be a well-cared for Elf-servant or a happy human woman that lives a short time in peace and harmony with the Elves, then dies of old age eventually, between any major conflicts...

Definitely Elwing. She had the ability to turn into a bird(which is awesome), and learned their language(I'm totally bird-crazy, always have been ). Plus, she married Earendil, the coolest guy elf in the Sil.

As far and gender-change goes, I'd be all over Feanor. First of all because I swear that our tempers match to the exact blow. But although his obsession with the silmaris can be understood and loved, it was just down creepy. And, hey! Who wouldn't love to be the Elf who brought power then failiure to the Noldor? Well..maybe not a lot of people, but certainly me. Do it all in one life, always fun.

Staying a lovely female, I'd be Galadriel. She was there to see the Numenor, the Great Battles, Ungoliant...And she lived in Middle-earth all the way to the Fourth Age to tell about it! Talk about longevity!

To be a Vala, Varda...All-powerful Uber-Goddess' tend to be appealing to any girl under the age of 25...

As far as the children of Illuvatar, I see myself wavering between Fingolfin and Thingol. Thingol for his arrogance, though often I'm just kidding around. Dior was also a favourite.

I love Fingolfin's Last Stand, but I'm not sure I'd want to BE him.

Somehow I picture myself as Dairon. Ugh. Maybe just the minstrelsy thing, although I haven't played flute for years.

How about Tinfang Warble instead?

Nienna. Without pity and mourning, there would be only brutality. Or perhaps Estë, for without refreshment, the marring could not be borne.

Well, I am casually mentioned in The Silmarillion.
Well, I could choose my favourite elf, Elrond (yes he is in the sil several times)
OR I would Be Nienna, I often weep for the ill done to Middle Earth.
I am such a star-lover, so I would also maybe be Varda.

Also, I just love the whole tale about him, and the things he did. I just think he´s an important character. And somehow he means quite a lot to me. I have yet to find out why though.

Legalos -- Well, if I had 3,000 fangirls chasing me, I too would not be hot on epic romance!

Bethberry -- Hey, what's wrong with epic romance? In another one of those "core of the onion" allusions or illusions (take your pick!), Tolkien says the Legendarium came to life for him when he saw his fair wife Edith dancing in a glade in Yorkshire. Hence, the birth of Luthien whose story, according to Tolkien, lay at the heart of the Silm. Letters, 417, 420.

For me it would be Turgon the Wise, son of Fingolfin and King of Gondolin. The hidden city gave hope to men and elves during the darkest times in the War of the Jewels. I seem to often find myself relied on and it is a great part of the book when Turgon opens Gondolin just before the Battle of the Unumbered Tears and sees his brother again. Fantastic!

Dear Child,

Were there not AAwtK, and were the Lonely Star not sailing off on her final leg, I bet you and I could have a wonderful discussion about this. Indeed, I hope we shall once our present commitments are done.

For now, I offer you this image, for I am well aware of Tolkien's statements about watching Edith dance. That famous illustration of Luthien dancing is one I would love to use for "Bethberry", had it not of course already been 'taken' for Luthien.

This image is large, I'm sorry to say; also, I must thank Turambar for showing it to me months and months and months ago. Indeed, at the time, I even attempted to identify the plants.

Yes, I agree. It is a topic worthy of consideration, and a poignant picture. But we must let the Star finish her appointed rounds first.

I would like to be Lúthien because of her beauty and grace and most of all, her courage. If I could be a Valar, I'd most likely be Nienna, because she's most like me, or Varda because she's queen of the stars and there's not much more I'd like than to look at the stars.

Child,

Thinking about your questions to Legolas and myself (and not getting into the discussion yet) was there any particular reason, other than the joke about Legolas' nick, for thinking that my response should be different from his? *curious, inquisive look*

Being a "not-so-adventurous" soul, I would have liked to have been Amarie: Beloved of Finrod Felagund, who remained behind in Valinor. Although I would have been lonely (if one can be lonely or truly unhappy) in Valinor) for long ages while Finrod resided in Middle-Earth, once his spirit returned, I'm sure it passed through the Halls of Mandos quickly and we would have been reunited again. I also choose her because our names are similar and because I currently await the return of my beloved who is away on duties he can not forsake.

I would definitely be Fingolfin. When I was young I saw a calender that had a picture of Fingolfin doing battle with Morgoroth. At the time I had no idea who or what the picture was about. Even then I was enamoured with the picture of the fearless warrior doing battle with an evil person. When I found out in later years what the picture was really about it just added to my liking of the elven warrior. After Fingolfin I would be Glorfindel or Ecthelion both of whom did battle with balrogs.
