Silly Poll: Sindar Style
This is a kind of sequel to Fordim Hedgethistle's revival of the poll on Favorite High King of the Noldor.
Who is your favorite Sinda ruler? Feel free to advocate for lesser elves. Personally, I particularly like Thingol. He is an old-school ruler (since he was one of the first). He dosnt let his daughter mess around with just any fellow, and he is passionate about his realm and the Sindar Culture. EDIT: Whoa...it didnt make a poll...ok... ________ MIDDLE EASTERN RECIPES Last edited by Elu Ancalime; 03-03-2011 at 11:12 PM. |

Only Fordim can make polls on the Downs. He has arranged the settings so that whenever anyone else attempts a poll it fails for no apparent reason.
You can't fight city hall, so don't even try.

However, I don't see why we shouldn't argue the question anyway, poll or no poll-it interests me.
The Sindar don't seem to have been as keen on formal Kings as the Noldor, preferring to be all, broadly speaking, under Thingol's protection. Elu has it right when he says "Sinda ruler". I will list those who, in my opinion, qualify. Thingol Dior (sort of thing) Elwing (sort of thing) Celeborn Cirdan Eol (debatable) Amdir Amroth Oropher Thranduil Legolas (just about) Of these, Thingol is much the greatest as well as the first, but I don't have quite as high an opinion of him as I used to. His power does rely to quite some extent on Melian's. Dior and Elwing...do they count? Don't like either particularly, really. Celeborn was a reliable and extremely long-lasting ruler. He's sort of the Gil-Galad of the contest-not all that dramatic, but you'd feel safest living under his rule. Cirdan is a similar sort. He provided a haven, but not really a standard. I never pictured him as possessing military prowess, which Celeborn certainly did. Amroth seems to have undoubtedly lacked a vocation for kingship... As for the wild Mirkwood crowd-Silvan though they might have become culturally, they didn't forget their roots. Thranduil's Mirkwood is a truer heir to Thingol's Doriath than Celeborn's Lorien. Thranduil kept a beleaguered kingdom together in the face of the Shadow, and deserves a good deal of credit for that. Legolas had it pretty easy, what with peace on earth and goodwill spread all over the place. To go back a tad earlier...Eol? He maintained his isolated woody knoll well, I suppose. His swords were impressive, his fathering less so. Can we call him a ruler?

Well, not only Fordim. Just say the word and I'll post a poll on this, if you like.

Eek! Sounds like Florida..too bad I live there.
Thinking about Cirdan, I myself would be glad to be nuder such a ruler. From what we know of him, he is obviously wise, being from back in the day(he was born or awakened at Cuivenen, wasnt he?) and had been through the wars of the First Age, the rise and fall of Numenor, and the domination of Sauron across Eriador, and throughout the fall of the Arnor and its successor kingdoms. Although not militarily strong, he seemed to know how to set a good defense: the towers built west of the Narog pointed that he seemed to know how to protect his people, even if Melkor having a navy was a little 'off.' His motif of living by the sea really was a protection. At few times did the Enemy reach elven shores, and then the elves had ships to fly to, and as Balar as an example, had places to go. Also, the fact he was given a Ring of Power is strong. And that he surrendured it without any pre-intention suggests that he had a strong willpower. ________ EASYVAPE VAPORIZER Last edited by Elu Ancalime; 03-03-2011 at 11:14 PM. |
