Fan-fiction
I've been seaching the Net for LotR fan-fics, but the only (good) ones I've come up with are those here, the 'Tolkien sarcasm'-page and on 'the one ring'-homepage. Everything else seems to be slash (ouch!!!), especially on fanfiction.net. Could you recommend some good stories?

We're very proud of the fan fiction sent in by our members here. I've not run into much of any great quality elsewhere. There is a very good epic poem called "The redemption of Daeron" which used to be available online. Also, there is an "e-book" called Isildur by a guy named Crawford if I recall. Isildur is entertaining but the details often are incorrect which is annoying.

Islidur Here is a link to the Islidur story. I read the story right after I read the Silmarillion for the first time and I thought it was great. Maybe I am remembering incorrectly, but I remember the story being extremely accurate to Tolkien's works. Islidur and Mithadan's fan fic are the only two fan fictions that I've read that I've liked. I still have to get into The Hobbits though.

There IS some good stuff at fanfiction.net, but it tends to be the earlier pieces. Instead of starting on page 1, start on the last page (I think the're up to page 184 now) and work forward. Don't skip the poetry - some of it is excellent! You might also want to check out Versaphile, which provides links to many fanfiction sites and lots of stories. Unfortunately, a high percentage of the stories linked there are slash, but at least the're WELL-WRITTEN slash. And there are some non-slash pieces linked there as well.
Anyone care to speculate as to why slash tends to dominate fanfiction (of all genres)? It never matters what the genre is, good fanfiction is ALWAYS hard to find! If anyone finds a link to that epic Daeron poem, I'd appreciate seeing it posted.

Maincoon's stuff is excellent! I love her writing, especially "Sam Gamgee Woke Up Gay". (She's got some serious stuff in there, too.)
Regardless of how "well written" it is, I think slash is just wrong. It makes me want to harf all over my monitor everytime I see it mentioned. Anyway... Hey, has anyone else noticed that the majority of slash writers and readers seem to be female?

Here's another good site for those of you who like high quality fanfiction that ISN'T slash - the Tolkien Fanfiction Site. The Short Prose section in the fanfiction archive contains many truely excellent short works - would that all fanfiction was this good!
Also, while the Versaphile site I listed in my earlier post does lean heavily towards slash, the site catalogs its story links by type, so if you choose the Gen category, you can avoid the slash, and nearly all the stories listed on that site are (from a purely technical standpoint - writing mechanics only) well done. I think a major problem with most fanfiction is that so many of the people who are inspired to write it are really young, and they simply haven't had enough practice at writing yet to produce good work. Writing well is HARD!!! And of course, there are the ones who seem to use fanfiction to work out their sexual issues - please, spare me, I really DON'T want to read that stuff. Porn is boring!
