Tolkien Elves

Why do elves never show their emotions? I know it's traditional and all that, but why? Any answers?

In the books elves show their emotions all the time. If you're talking about the movies, they probably just wanted to make themdifferent from humans

Yes I am talking about the film. Likem have you ever seen Legolas get angry, or look happy? The most I've seen is Elrond raises his voice slightly.

You can't go by the films, but assuming you are, PJ probably did it to show that the Elves were aloof, ancient, and the first-born and all that for the average guy that comes in and knows nothing about the elven culture and history.

That does not sound like creatures created to be emotionally dead. Elves feel love stronger than any creature, the love that drives them to weave magics and defy to the dark lord himself. They feel pain and anger great enough to drive themselves like a spear into the very heart of the Hells of Iron, though there be no hope of return. They alone feel the pure bliss of Valinor in the True West and the horror at the loss of the Two Trees of Light. Elves show their emotions in great ways. Arwen and Lúthien give up their imortality for love of their men , and Elros for love of his kin. Elves have and show much greater emotion than any or the mortal folk save perhaps the Valar (the wrath of Morgoth anyone?)

As a matter of fact it is about the facts, this is the books forum for advanced discussion of the books. There is a forum here for movie based discussion in the movie forum.

Is it? Oh damn it is! Sorry everyone, that's why you were all acting like you had the highest godforsaken degree in Tolkien. Right, I would close this toic, only I'm not a moderator, so I can't.

I was not flaming you it is just that if you interesting in Arda then it is important that you get the full impression of all the Speaking Folk, and a large part of what the Elves are is the sheer power of emotion you feel. If you believe that the Eldar don’t have emotions then you miss a large part of the art of JRR Tolkien and Ea. And I don’t know about other people in these Forums but personally i am not interested in the works for academic reasons, but as that it is a work of art.
