Elrond's name
Why is Elrond called Halfelven? His mother Elwing was an Elf and his father Earendil was half-elf, half-man.
Shouldn't he be called Elrond Threequarterelven?

Well, I had thought about that too, but that's too long, and if you have a mix of two races, you might as well be half-and- half.

I bet cause "Elrond Mostly-elven" sounds a bit silly.

I briefly considered that discrepancy, but didn't really think that it was worth discussing as the answer would inevitably come down to "because Tolkien said so".

Actually, if you want to get technical, Elrond is also part Maia, as his great-grandmother (I think that is the right number of generations) was a Maia.

Michael Jackson is a black pop artist; Elrond is Half-Elven. That's life, folks.

Lets see: Luthien>Dior>Elwing, ah looks like Elwing was not all Elven.

Yes, this could be much more complicated, what are we thinking?
According to my calculations, Elwing was one half elf on her mother's side, and one quarter Man, one eighth Elf, and one eighth Maia on her father's side, meaning that in all she was five-eighths elven. Elrond, then (if by some freakish chance my math is right) was 3/8 Man, 1/16 Maia, and 9/16 Elf. Ninesixteenthselven sounds even worse than Threequarterselven, though... let's just say half. It's close enough, isn't it?? --Belin Ibaimendi

That's some impressive mathematical thought. How about.....Lord Elrond?

Perhaps you are being too technical. It's as simple as this:
Elwing and Earendil are both more or less half-elven. Their children (Elros and Elrond) would be the same. And just like everyone else said, why would Tolkien name someone with such a precocious label as "fiveeighthselven"? [ July 24, 2002: Message edited by: Orofacion of the Vanyar ] |
