Tolkien's War Records
Despite the late hour (for me) I had to post the following link to Tolkien's war records/papers, which I found quite by accident at the National Archives website. Featured are his signing up papers, his medical discharge certificate and an extremely respectful letter reporting himself as fit for duty. Interestingly, he joined the army 'regulars' - no doubt there were rules on having to do this in order to hope to gain a desired posting. Tolkien wanted to join the Lancashire Fusilliers in particular, so he may have signed as a regular for this reason (I know that in the RAF men had to sign as regulars if they hoped to stand a chance at gaining their wings).
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/p...le/tolkien.htm One of the more 'interesting' websites with .gov.uk at the end, no?
