Silmarillion 2nd Edition (?)
<font face="Verdana"><table><TR><TD><FONT SIZE="1" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Newly Deceased
Posts: 1</TD><TD></TD></TR></TABLE> Houghton Mifflin is releasing a 2nd Edition of the Silmarillion this month in both hardcover and paperback format. According to Barnes & Noble: "This new edition includes textual corrections and, by way of introduction, a letter written by Tolkien that details his conceptions of the earliest Age." Is this a genuine, new edition, or just a new cover on the Naismith illustrated version? If it is a new edition, any idea on those "textual corrections"? It seems to have 7 more pages than the edition I own. Are those blank pages in the back, or could it possibly address Orodreth's parentage of Gil-galad and other hot topics? I hope it actually has some substantive changes, just to stir the pot some more. Think of the threat to everyone's personal "canon" if there actually are ANY changes.Think of the new points to discuss and challange. I can't wait. </p> |

I will most certainly look into it all, as will a few others here. I cordially incite you to the Silmarillion Project Forum where all manner of issues re: the Canon Silmarillion are discussed. As for the 2nd edition containing changes I find this quite plausable, although 7 pages is a suprisingly small addition. I would certainly expect the Gil-Gald son of Fingon issue to be major point covered if any textual emendations are to be made. And I just bought a second Hardback because the first was 23 years old and getting threadbare. Thanks for the update. I have been haunting the forums for the last few weeks, but only started posting today.I suspect the page difference in the 2nd Edition is due to format or endpapers. But I am enjoying the thought of any new material. I tried a few bookstores, but they do not have it yet. Ah, well. I can wait. It will be my 6th copy of the Silmarillion, not counting the Martin Shaw cassette/cd editions I have. Love those. I have listened to the Silmarillion around 30-35 times, going to and from work. </p> |

Do you happen to know how reliable the pronounciation is? Posts: 6</TD><TD></TD></TR></TABLE> Re: Silmarillion 2nd Edition (?) IMHO, Martin Shaw did a pretty good job overall. Off the top of my head, I don't recall any places where he was totally offbase in pronunciation, and there are only a handful of places where he drops a letter or garbles something. I always smile when I get to the point when he says "Angbang" instead of "Angband" after having said it correctly about 50 times before that. It is also great to hear him deliver some of the scathing lines in there. When Thingol chews out Beren for having the temerity to even enter Doriath. Or Fëanor with his sword against Fingolfin's throat. Húrin and his "Aurë entulava!" And the creepiness of hearing Morgoth or Sauron. Most of Martin Shaw's pronunciations are stuck in my head now. Tolkien's works were meant to be read aloud. Even the material that filtered through Christopher. (Just don't try it with the commentary portions of HoME!" <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> </p> |

I work for a book wholesaler/distributor and we are scheduled to get the 2nd ed. this month, and should get it a week or so before bookstores. I will let you all know if there are noteable major changes, but from what I have been reading elsewhere it is likely that any changes are just errata not actual additions or changes to story. CT notes in the Preface: "I have removed a number of errors in the text and index which until now have escaped correction in the hardback printings... Chief among these are those that concern the numbering and sequence of certain of the rulers of Numenor [see UT and PoME for explanation]." Letter 131 is is also given with some 'minor corrections and omission of some footnotes'. Posts: 1</TD><TD></TD></TR></TABLE> Re: Silmarillion 2nd Edition Greetings all!! Great site you've got here, I like it a lot. I hope I can share my knowledge of Middle-earth with you. Your Silmarillion project is most interesting. SOmething I will stick with <img src=smile.gif ALT=""> With regard to the Silmarillion second edition, I ordered a while ago, but shipment was delayed. Barnes&Noble, rather foolishly, said on their site that this Second edition would be available by May. After the relatively long delay, I checked The Hougton Mifflin site and it said the books would only be published by April 15th. I must say that I didn't admit any "real" changes in this edition. What T-E quoted sounds everytyhing but impressive, as I am sure you will agree. What makes you think the parentage of Gil-Galad would be something that was in special need of repare? Cheers </p> |

The Chris Tolkien thread prompted me to do a look-see for this. I knew I saw it somewhere. I guess I dont have this 2nd edition.
