The Mirror of Galadriel
I was skimming through UT last night and came across the chapter on the Palantíri. A thought struck me: the Mirror of Galadriel is much like the seeing stones. It can show the onlooker visions of past, present and future, but these visions are not to be controlled by the will of a person. Both appear as ordinary objects, yet they are more than they seem.
Where did the Mirror of Galadriel come from? What do you think drives its visions- the water, the wood, Galadriel herself? I'd really like to hear your opinion on the matter. [ February 27, 2003: Message edited by: Ithaeliel ]

It is the Mirror of Galadriel, so it is intrinsically connected with her. I would hazard a guess therefore that it acts as a focus for her psychic powers - what's the word ... osanwe?

Well, it may be the Mirror of Galadriel, but I've always believed it was only called so due to ownership, not because she controlled what people saw in the water (which she does not). I have no doubt it is intrinsically connected to her, but she doesn't tell the mirror what to show, if you follow me. Galadriel herself stated that she could not tell what Frodo was to see when he visited the mirror.
My point is, it may be something to do with the viewer's mind; what thoughts concern him or her most greatly. That's my opinion.

Yes, I agree that she had no control over what was revealed to the viewer. I was thinking of it more as a channel for her power to allow the viewer to see images relevant to them ...
... otherwise would anyone be able to use it, wouldn't they?

I always thought it was her ring that allowed her to do it.

Sorry about that; I did a search, but found nothing (dangit, I swore I'd never produce a duplicate thread!)

I don't really mind, only when I started the thread do I usually say anything. And I was tired last night!

Galadriel's Mirror is most likely a combination of everything said. Galadriel, her ring, the object itself, and THE USER. I storngly disagree that the user has nothing to do with what is seen, because then y did Sam see something different.

I didn't say the user had nothing to do with what was being seen. Rather, I meant to say the viewer was probably the largest catalyst for the visions that occurred in the mirror, due to the fact that everyone saw something different, and most of the time it was their biggest mental issue of the moment. Sorry for the confusion, and welcome to the downs, Sandman!
