Elfish Pet's
People say that the dog has the resmblence of it's owner. If so, what dog would elves have?
I would say golden retreivers, since they have golden hair and much elegance. But that is just me. What do you think? Greetings, Anuion ________ Host And Design Last edited by Helkahothion; 03-07-2011 at 03:10 AM. |

As much as I like golden retrievers, they don't strike me as elves. Too friendly and playful.
I'm thinking perhaps German Shepherd. But maybe not. Hard question.

Afghan hounds would definitely suit the style concious elves.
Huan was a wolfhound, perhaps like a giant Irish wolfhound, though I'd have thought they're a bit 'shaggy' for the elves.

How about red setters? Long legged, slender and elegant, with silky, flowing hair.

I see German Shepherds as more of a Man's pet than an Elf's. But let me think here...
Irish setters may be a good dog for an Elf, but what about the collie? Loyal, brave, beautiful and intelligent; I've always seen collies as creatures older than they appear. Perhaps a collie? Edit: I'll just fix these typos, then.... [ March 03, 2003: Message edited by: Rynoah, the Overly-Happy ]

Yes, I think Irish setters (like mine), would be a suitable Elven pet. (Notice it's Elven, not Elfin.)

*lol* what a fascinating thread...
Afghan hounds would definatly be a dog for the elves...or maybe a saluki? Those dogs are so graceful and beautiful, sinewy and flowing...definatly an elf dog. Saluki I think a Great Dane would fit as a dog of the Maia, and maybe a rottweiler for the rangers? *lol* I'm thinking a Dachshund for hobbits!

I know this'll sound strange, but I've always thought Elves would be allergic to cats. I dunno why, it's just something that I always associated with Elves.

Actually, I could see elves with cats. Maybe even more than dogs. I'd think big cats, though. Well, I'd prefer big cats, but then, I'm no elf. But, elves could be cat lovers instead of dog lovers. But the question is... house cats, or better- I mean big cats?

I'd say domestic cats, not big cats. I just can't picture an elf being closely followed by a tiger companion or stroking a lion.
*shrug* But anything is possible.

Yeah, after I said it, I realized that would look pretty weird. And, heh heh, I got off topic because the original question was "what dog." I don't know, personally, I'm not satisfied with the Irish Setter, but, oh well. I think it would depend on the elf. Hehe, that's an evasive answer. Well, if I were an elf, I'd have a husky or a german shepherd or a mix.

I don't mind that you talk about cat's. It's a discussion. You can change it. It's about animals, cause if we remain to one section this one would not grow a lot won't you say?
I still think that it is a golden retreiver, but a clooie is close too. I kinda liked the idea of Gandalf having a dog arround. Maybe that is why the Balrog followed them. He was hungry. Hahahaahaha, you know what would b weird? Gollum walking arround with a glass bowl containing a goldfish. Altough that would be more something for Saruman or Sauron. Pippin or Aragorn could have one to I guess.

I've aways thought greyhounds would be good for an elf. They're quite reserved but loyal and peaceful. They're fast of course and I think that they look very elegant, with their short hair and thiness. Perfect for elves (well perhaps not perfect)

(to above) Aye, that's it! I always thought that the seeing-stones looked like fishbowls.
On pets... it's hard to think about what pet would be appropriate for an elf (or other LOTR character) without personal taste coming into it. I have the feeling that people who chose spaniels, or huskies, or whatever really favored those breeds to begin with, and so, when faced with a choice (what dog would an elf have?) they would of course pick their favorite. I'll try and be objective about this. The dog in the Silmarillion was a large wolfhound, and so I think elves would favor this breed because it would help with defense and hunting. Smaller dogs were bred to be lap-dogs and used for amusement (thus the name "toy" dogs). Even though someone probably said it as a joke, I'm not too quick to put off the option of a poodle--if it's a large one, that is, and not a toy. They were used in hunting waterfowl, I think. Though I'm partial to cats, I can't see a good elvish hunter or a rider of Rohan walking around with a feline on his shoulder. Perhaps one haunts the study, catching mice for her master and sitting atop books and scrolls; or one inhabits the stables, keeping the mice away from the feed. An elven-lady would have a pretty that she could comb and that would warm her lap on cold nights. I can picture the elves as being falconers. Perhaps one would have an owl. Though I don't think it would be in a cage--I can't see an elf putting a live animal in a cage, especially a bird. Hm. Musings. Fun. -'Vana

Whoa, Falcons, perfect for an elf (once again tho, not in a cage). But since elves, seem to be kinda, woody (if i may so), they could have wide varity of animals. i've always though a serpent of some kind would fit the approprite elven mystique.
But what wouldn't the animal somehow relate to the single elves personality. Once again what about a good trusty ferret? or weasel of some sort? |

I was thinking, and I suddenly pictured wolves being companions with elves. I know this contradicts how the wargs are the enemies, but...
Hm, they just seem right together. Think of a majestic white wolf howling gracefully when approaching her elf companion.

I also thought wolves. But that could be my personal taste breaking in. I see Fingolfin with a wolf, not with a Greyhound or an Irish Setter. Although, Greyhounds would work for some elves.
Ha! And someone else rooting for the big cats. Yeah!

OH OH I got it. The perfect animal for an elf: Squirels. They live in the woods. Are cute and have long hair. And according to a sertain picture, they carrie bazookas wich are long ranged weapons, so that matches the elf as well. Except for the gunpowder that is.
Haldir Potter. Lol hahahahahaha. Fighting a cave troll and beating him by smacking his own club on his head with magic. Man that just proves how lame HP is. Greetings, Anuion ________ Michigan Marijuana Dispensary Last edited by Helkahothion; 03-07-2011 at 03:11 AM. |
