I've always liked Earwen, Rian, Huor, Hurin, Morwen, and Aredhel. I mean, without Earwen you have no Galadriel, Finrod Felagund, and Aegnor. Rian and Huor, the parents of Tuor; without them you have no Earendil, Elros, or Elrond. Morwen and Hurin were the parents of Turin Turambur and Nienor Niniel. Admittedly, that story had a really sad ending, but still. No Aredhel and you don't have Maeglin, one of the most interesting albeit pyschotic characters of the Silmarillion.
And yeah, let's have some respect for Ereinion Gil-galad, the last High King of the Noldor in Middle Earth!

If your going to get into "if these people weren't here, then these others wouldn't be either" then it's probably easier just writing the whole of ME, they're probably all connected in some obtuse way.

My vote is for Cirdan! The most overlooked elf for Three Ages... lord of the Falathrim in the First Age, where he took messages from Ulmo and protected a young Gil-Galad. He, along with G.G. and Elrond, led the elves against Sauron in the Second Age, even being present when Isildur cuts the Ring from Sauron's finger. In the Third Age he recieved the Istari and deemed their importance, was a member of the Wise (White Council) and kept the Havens open for elves journeying back West.
Cirdan rocks... |

What about Tevildo, Prince of Cats? (Lost Tales II) He is only in the first manuscript of Beren and Luthien, and is never seen again.
Cirdan rocks! And Bill the Pony. And Butterbur. And Sons of Elrond. And..... (hours pass).... And dwarf #2 at the Council. We must let the underappreciated know that they are appreciated!! I want to give them all a hug.

I think that all the extras in the film like the elves in the backround and such should be given credit because they were in the movie, they wore the costrumes, they woke up at a early hour and also Haldir was in the movie and he got like no credit! That is so wrong!

Hmm...let's see... CARANTHIR! C'mon, gotta love the guy! Despite the fact that he's called "the Dark" and he's not the nicest of Feanor's sons, he deserves some love! He just sends out this aura of charm! All right, so I'm a little strange.
How about Haleth? She's never mentioned even though she was one of the strongest characters Tolkien wrote. It takes courage to see your father and brother killed then reunite and lead your people through dangerous lands as well as refuse Caranthir's (very gentlemanly) offer of land and protection.

I worship Tom Bombadil and Bill the Pony. Love the pony, respect the Bombadil.
And alas poor Celeborn, he's whipped Lynette

I say that the entire Second Age is underappreciated. We hear all about pre-First Age, when the Vala are nearly the only ones, then about the founding of the Elf civilization, and the coming of Men...then it nearly skips ahead to the Last Alliance and the Fellowship. Even in Unfinished Tales and Lost Tales I and II, it is all the First Age...I say bring on the Second Age!

I will admit to laughing heartily at that Orc chant.
Caranthir wasn't nice. Maedhros and Maglor were sort of alright but still not that good. Give it up for Mandos folks. That guy rocks!

Bill the Pony is the greatest!
Butterbur is also a good one, Rosie Cotton, I need to go back to the book and look up some others (I have only read the LOTR, so I do not know any of the other charaters from the other books )

NO MORE BOMBURS !

Anborn is classic, I really like him. It's not everyone who can manage to say "squirrel" five times in one paragraph!! Squirrel has got to be the funniest word ever! Squirrel squirrel squirrel! It sounds like a squirrel! Tolkien created SO many characters!

speaking of under appriciated elves. Gildor Inglorien and his wandering high elves. Now i haven't read the Silm yet, so I don't know if he has a bigger story. But in FOTR he helped the hobbits get out of the shire and gave a really good quote:
"Do not meddle in the affaires of wizards...etc" Oh and lets not forget the one they keep screwing up; "Don't you leave him Samwise Gamgee!" (sigh, i think these quotes were him and his elves...could be wrong. apologize if i am)
