Feel like competing with www.minastirith.com?
Hear me now, Barrow-wights of the North!!
I am come from Minas Tirith (www.minastirith.com, a Tolkien message board just like the BD) down in the South. I hereby challenge you on the behalf of all citizens of Minas Tirith to a game of... typing! Please join this simple yet amusing project: WhatPulse You have a small client program running on your computer. Whenever you press any key on your keyboard, the program notices it and increases your keystroke count by one. Then you can have the client to 'pulse' a central server regularly, that is, send your amount to it and then your amount is added to your total amount in the statistics. Users are competing with each other. You can also create and join teams. Like indivual users, team are competing with each other. Team members are also competing with each other within their team. Some MTers have formed their own team and now I suggest that the BD forms one too! Let's see who is the one that types more. You have to act fast because Minas Tirith have already had their team for several days and we have got a nice lead! Perhaps we could start all over again if you protest too much. [ February 19, 2003: Message edited by: The Barrow-Wight ] |

Why? I'm all about the friendly competition, but this seems kind of pointless and easy to cheat at.

I will answer for the son of Elendil, if I may.
Yes, the whole thing is 'pointless', in that it has no point beyond itself. It is also, however, rather fun, both to know how many keys you have struck (I for one found the answer surprisingly high) and to engage in friendly competition. As regards the possibility of cheating, how exactly do you mean? As there is no purpose in 'winning' other than knowing that you have hit more keys than any other, I would be surprised if many people were attracted to the possibility of cheating. The two main ways of cheating would be either to try and hit the keys without typing anything in order to boost your score, or to fool either the server or the client with false information. The former would be tiresome, and the latter I at least have not the skill to do. Also, I believe that the moderators of the project are on the look-out for any who are cheating. If you have further questions, my dear burg-hobbit, do not hesitate to ask. The Laurenendôrian.

What has that got to do with Tolkien?

No, thanks. This has nothing to do with Tolkien.
Closing.
