The Lord of the Rings
who is the lord of the rings? is it Sauron?
i don't know if this was in the books, but in the film Gandalf said to Saruman: "There is only one lord of the rings, and he does not share power." was he referring to Sauron then?

The One Ring is the Lord of the Rings
Edit: No, the One Ring is NOT the Lord of the Rings, sorry It's Sauron..., I thought about it and it's Sauron. "The Ring wants to return to the hand of its master." [ February 20, 2003: Message edited by: Finnguala ]

The lord of the Rings is sauron. This is from the chapter "many meetings"
Pippin: Here is out noble cousin! make way for frodo, the lord of the ring! gandalf: Hush! Evil things do not come into this valley; but all the same we should not name them. The Lord of the Ring is not frdo, but the master of the dark tower of mordor.

No, the Lord of the Rings is definetly Sauron. Since the One Ring was, in essence, Sauron, and through the One he controlled the other 19....He ruled, therefore was Lord.

I suppose that the One Ring was the lord of the other Rings of Power, though, so in essence it was 'the Lord of the Rings.'
...but, yea, it was Sauron, seeing as he controlled the One Ring. More interesting the other way 'round though... |

if you like twists, you could say that the ring was the one that controlled sauron. It rules his life, and he is never complete without it.

Yes, it was Sauron. I love titles, they can be so interesting and tricky. It actually could be the one ring, but based on facts from the book, Tolkien intended it to be Sauron. If he wanted to make it clearer, he could have said, The Lord of the Ring, leaving out the 's'. If you like interesting titles, how about this one, The Most Dangerous Game. That could be taken two different ways. The first is that the 'game' is the sport of hunting in the book, the second being the 'game' is what's being hunted. If you read it, you'll know what I mean. You can't tell which, maybe it means both, just like LotR. Who knows, maybe it has a double meaning.

Actually, there IS a twist in this. Sauron is the Lord of the RING, but not of the ringS. You see that? Lord of the RingS means all the rings, even the elven ones, and Sauron´s not their Lord! I´d go for the one ring, if anything.

I disagree. Tolkien intended Sauron to be the Lord of all of the Rings of Power, not just the One Ring in particular. Though he was not directly involved in the forging of the Three, he instructed Celebrimbor and the smiths of Eregion in their making. The Three were still made in such a way that they were ultimately bound by the One.
Since Sauron had the One Ring with which to "in the Darkness bind them", meaning *all* of the Rings of Power, he was in fact the "Lord of the Rings". |

Yes, what Phrim said. The title refers to Sauron, even though he never gained control of them all, that was one of his goals. And one of the main purposes of the one ring was to eventually control the others. Welcome!
