Clues'n'Letters

The following game (exact match was not found in the recesses of the quiz room, if there is such, please let know the moderator to incorporate current one into the old one) is a mix up of 'cryptic clues' and 'letters' games. It works as follows:

Sample:

Quiz: (E) Union of bloodlines, named 'hero' in the Hobbit, father of sequel's hero's 'true love'
Answer: Elrond (union of blood - Maia, Human, Elf drops, father of Arwen (hero of the sequel - Aragorn, 'named the hero': [in the Hobbit - In those days of our tale there were still some people who had both elves and heroes of the North for ancestors, and Elrond the master of the house was their chief']

Next quiz should start with D, than (i.e. the last latter of the previous quiz answer)
The person to answer should be able to explain all clues of the question, besides giving the answer to the quiz itself

So:

D

There were several of the name, humans and elves alike. The answer I'm after was the second among humans, wise to an extent, proud beyond measure, labelled 'heathen' by an 'emissary'.

***********************************

EDIT: the hard quote posted by Perky brought to my attention that the guidelines for giving hints and clues are not set. Therefore I edit this post to set the following additional rule:

If the quiz is not solved for ten days, the author should reveal its second letter. Par example, if Elrond was not got for ten days, I would have been obliged to tell you that the word I were after started with El

end of EDIT

***********************************

Is the answer Denethor II ? There were three Denethors, the elf, human 1, and human 2. This is the second human named Denethor. He was wise, until he was overtaken by the palantir. He was so proud he underestimated his enemy, and I believe Gandalf called him a heathen?

I am so confused, but I'm having fun trying!

Wait, why R? Is it the last letter of the answer? Anyways...I think I get it now...

R

Brought from the outlaw, bound to the friend of he who pours, bringer of the messenger, and bringer of the bringer of a small one's safety.

Have at it!

Radagast?

Brought from the outlaw- Not too sure about that one.
Bound to the friend of he who pours- Bound to Yavanna, who is Manwe's friend (Manwe controls the rains of Arda)?
Bringer of the messenger- Brought Gwaihir to Gandalf in Orthanc?
Bringer of the bringer of a small one's safety- Brought Gandalf who brought Gwaihir who saved Frodo and Sam from Mount Doom?

Sorry, but It's not Radagast. But if it helps, Radagast was my first choice for R, but I came up with a better one

Thank you, SpM

May the answer be Roheryn - Aragorn's horse?
  • Brought from the outlaw - i.e. Roheryn was already Aragorn's horse at a time he was Strider, i.e. outlaw.
  • Bound to the friend of he who pours - m-m-m, hard one, that, Halbarad brought the horse, right? He probably was visiting Bree just like his chief, so 'he who pours' would be Barliman, pouring beer into their mugs or something.
  • Bringer of the messanger - Roheryn brought Halbarad, who was a messanger?
  • Bringer fo the Bringer etc... Roheryn brought Aragorn, who brought Merry's (small one) safety - when he healed him

Far-fetched, I surmise, but worth a try nevertheless

Sorry, but that's wrong. Fingolfin II's second and last guess were pretty close, though...

mm-m-m, hard one, that, Perky, you know it.

May it be a Ring (Ruling Ring, Ring of Power)
  • Brought from the outlaw - brought from Gollum, who, being yet a Smeagol, was outlawed by his family.
  • Bound to the friend of he who pours - he who pours would be Morgoth here - that is, who pours (or used to) his power into the very matter of the world. The Ring is bound to 'his friend' - Sauron
  • Bringer of the messanger - by implication, the Ring brought Sauron's messanger to Dain Ironfoot.
  • Bringer of the Bringer etc... The ring brought its bringer (Frodo) adn its another bringer (Gollum) to Mount Doom, where Gollum's actions brough small one's (Frodo again) safety - not physically, but on spiritual level - releasing him from the Ring itself

?

Pity...

Frightened by the hardness of your question, I've set rules for hinting (see the initial post up there). All I have to do is to wait another week and get the second letter to lighten my task, unless someone gets it before

I'll keep trying though...

I had clues all worked out for 'Rings of Power', too, HI.

They seemed so logical . . . now I'm glad you beat me to it and took the bullet for this guess . . .

I do believe I got it... Is it Rian?

brought from the outlaw - she was Belagund's daughter, who was an outlaw,

bound to the friend of him who pours - I don't quite know the meaning of this but I suppose it's a reference to her being the mother of Tuor who was a protege of 'he who pours' = Ulmo

bringer of the bringer of a small one's safety - of her was born Earendil, whose light was captured in the phial of Galadriel who was responsible of Frodo's safety in Mordor.

EDIT: eek! I forgot 'bringer of the messages'. I have no idea, in fact she was the one waiting for messages, not delivering them...

merci, mademoiselle. So, behold and be awestruck by the next one:

The place I'm after was wide and empty. Once it was to the East of the green plain, to the North of the place were eldest son and his riders have taken their guard. Before that, the former eldest son was rescued by another eldest son.

Ok then:

The place I'm after was wide and empty. - It was a plain.
Once it was to the East of the green plain, (Ard-galen) to the North of the place were eldest son and his riders have taken their guard. (Himring)
Before that, the former eldest son was rescued by another eldest son. - Maedhros being rescued by Fingon?

I was lucky

So, we are back on L, it seems:

White-Hand Lalaith

Laughther of the Steadfast, who was the vassal of the Valiant, and Elfsheen: Lalaith was the daughter of Húrin, vassal of Fingon, and Morwen Eledhwen.

Laughter short, which ended very soon: She died very young, due to the Evil Breath.

Eye Shouldn't it be H?

Oh well. No matter.

Is it Saruman?

Left the path: He did not stick to the mission of the Istari but sought power for himself.

Refused a gift many times offered: He was offerered an opportunity to repent on a number of occasions, but refused.

Blown away in the end: The cloud that rose from his fallen body was blown away by a wind from the West.

Assuming as much ...

.. the next letter is N and the clue is:

Bound to the emblem of the horse
Hailed the black ones
Discovered the chronicler

Have at it!

NightKnight has just left Hobbiton.
Numenoreans?

Bound to Rohan, some turned evil, and uhm... Wasn't it a gondorian that wrote the end of the Red Book?

not 10 days yet, I know, but still...

Still two days to go till SpM is obliged to give us another hint, but, if nobody objects, would he mind revealing second letter now? I'm clueless, I should confess...

Shield

I would prefer to give a further clue, if that's OK. So here it is:

Said to help sometimes in gaining entry.

White-Hand Time for a new letter ...

10 days already? How time flies.

OK, the next letter is 'O'.

Here's all the clues for ease of reference:

NO

Bound to the emblem of the horse
Hailed the black ones
Discovered the chronicler
Said to help sometimes in gaining entry

Another clue: the last one's cryptic.

Any takers now?
