One Thing in Common
In this game, you must identify the one thing in common for the persons (or things or places) in the list. Of course, there may be more than one thing in common and the quizzer may not have thought of all of them. Quizzer's discretion as to whether alternate answer will be accepted.
Let's get started. What do the following characters have in common?
Maybe I should rephrase what I meant by "one thing in common". These characters have something in common that is not shared with other characters (from LOTR). It's a "5-man out" question. (Game idea from CBC Radio show "Definitely Not the Opera". They have a sound clip quiz, where you must identify what all the sounds - music, news soundbites, sound effects, etc. - have in common. Usually something in the news. Maybe this game would work better with 5 quotes - not necessarily dialogue - from the book.) [ November 20, 2001: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ] After such a rocky start, I can hardly believe this game is still going after more than a year. Well, I was thinking of something significant in the various plotlines of LOTR. ALL of the characters can walk.
But I give that you may be right - this game might not work out. Maybe I should rephrase what I meant by "one thing in common". These characters have something in common that is not shared with other characters (from LOTR). It's a "5-man out" question. [ November 11, 2001: Message edited by: Lostgaeriel ]

OK. This is rather tough.
HINT #1 Plot or Action Related. Each of these characters are involved in a similar situation. Sometimes this plot device is used as a cliff-hanger and sometimes just to add suspense.

Is it that each of them loses consciousness during a battle ?

I don't recall Pippin or Gorbag having hidden identities. So that's not it.
Turambar has almost got what I have in mind. It's not the unconsciousness of the characters. And I'm not sure that Gorbag did pass out. And other characters did lose consciousness . Merry, Faramir? By considering Hint #1 re: suspense, cliff-hanger, you should get it. HINT #2: It has to do with how certain other characters and/or the reader view(s) these characters in those "battle situations". Whether it's for an instant or for many days/pages.

OK. I guess another hint is in order. I don't think anyone is having any fun with this.
HINT #3: A. Faramir almost fits into this list. B. See the post by Amarylis, November 13 in The Books II, Favourite Part? Favourite Book? C. “The report of my death was an exaggeration.” - Samuel L. Clemens

My headache's making this difficult but...didn't they also think that Faramir was dead when he was laid out with his father????

Yes! Telchar got it. They were all presumed dead at some point in the story. Faramir was only presumed to be dying and better off dead by Denethor.
Whew! I apologise to everyone for ever starting this aggravating game! Play on!

A good guess Beregond, but its not that simple - think along different lines - and forget family and blood.

A wild guess: they all had something important crafted by Telchar the Dwarf-smith?
Aragorn had Narsil, Beren had Angrist, and Curufin, Hador and Turin all held the Helm of Dor-Lomin at some point (if my memory serves me correctly ). |

Ecthelion of Gondolin, Ecthelions of Gondor... they're almost the same, when it comes to this list - but it'll help you find the right answer if you'll think of the Ecthelions of Gondor.
I meant Anarion son of Isildur, but there most probably is a connection to Tar-Anarion, the eighth king of Numenor as well. |

Okay, I have a zillion possibilities, except Brandir keeps getting in the way.
They all ruled Minas Anor / Minas Tirith for a time? Each had one (surviving) son? Each was slain treacherously? - Let us know the answer ASAP. I have a phenomenally good question! - Cirdan/Maglor68 |
