I guess the first Tolkien art I saw, aside from Tolkien's own illustrations in the Hobbit, were the Brothers Hildebrant. Those stayed in my head. Then, Rowena's illustration of Beren and Luthien blew me away. I guess I was the right age. Years and years later, I encountered Alan Lee, John Howe and Ted Naismith. Alan for his subtlety and John for his power (especially for the great painting of Gandalf crossing a green field in the rain.) You have to track down the John Howe poster collection. You need to see them in a larger size to appreciate them. Ted Naismith for his use of color. His shot of Tuor discovering Gondolin, the one of Turin and Glaurung at the Gates of Nargothrond, aaaagh! Too many great ones. So, right now, I would have to say Naismith and Howe.

All I saw at first were what apeared to be inhuman arms reaching out to each other. Rather creepy. As the full painting was revealed, the feeling changed to that of the forest protecting and taking care of its children. The elves were definitely part of the forest, and not at odds with it. Much more sublime.

Don't just look at the boring ol' line illustrations in your old copy of the Hobbit, go out and get a book of Tolkien artwork (eg: JRR Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator by Hammond and Scull). "This sig is proudly quote-free." -Me. There's this one picture where Turin meets Ulmo by John Garland and I must say that it was a "colorfull picture",I liked it but if you want a good Turin Meets Ulmo picture look at John Howe's "Turin Meets Ulmo".That is an awsome picture! A real eye opener. I am very suprised that none of you chose Micheal Herring. It doesnt seem that many people bought the Ballantine Books version of The Hobbit and LOTR, but he did VERY nice cover art for all four books, and I cant imagine the characters looking any other way than he drew them. It was very nice. I hadnt looked at the cover of The Fellowship of The Ring when I had been reading The Hobbit. And when I read The Hobbit I got a very good mental picture of Gandalf. Then, when I go to read The Fellowship, the picture of Gandalf on the cover looks EXACTLY like I had pictured him in my mind. Has anyone seen the pictures I am talking about? Here is part of the Picture from the cover of The Hobbit showing Bilbo and Gollum behind him:

Edelfelt's images are nice and beautiful, but certainly lack something. Nasmith's visions are just all too wrong. I think Lee's the best Tolkien artist I know. His etherean and frail images are absolutely beautiful portrayts of Middle-Earth as well as a great source for inspiration for the books. And you'll learn to drive out of focus, I'm you and if anything unfolds, it's supposed to. Creator of Elvenhome, a fantasy forum and part of theTolkien EZBoard Network.
