I just thought it might be interesting to introduce a thread that dealt solely with the physical landscape of Tolkiens world. So this topic can just relate to geography. Lets see how it goes...

First Question:

On his way to the Cracks of Doom Frodo journeyed through various forrests/wooded areas. From his departure from Crickhollow name in order those visited.

Bingo!
On the big map of ME in the beginning of the 3th age, I found some small woodlands called the 'eryn vorn' right on the coast of Minhiriath. Don't know anything else about them tho.

Maglor, you learn from looking up.. How else will you get the knowledge to answer without the book?

I agree with Gandalf on this. For example, if Gandalf (the Gray) hadn't looked things up, he woulnd't know any of the things he talked about at the Council of Elrond.

I agree with both GtW and Maglor! But we could make some more quiztreads ending with "NO BOOK PEEKING" - and in the rest of the treads it would be ok to use books.
As the rest of you I too use books, but mostly to confirm or recall memory.

Usually I don't use books (but offen maps) when I ask new questions in the quiz forum, but always in Quotable Quotes.

Good idea. An "NBP" thread would be challenging! But if you have some idea, I think it is OK normally to look in books.

Hey guys -

Relax everyone. I was just being facetious (partially, anyway). I actually have no problem with people looking up the answers. Some of the questions are so obscure that if no one looked them up the thread would die out.

Personally I prefer not referencing the material. I feel like it's a bigger challenge. All of the questions I have answered to date (arguably not many) I have answered without book assistance. This is just my personal preference.

However, if anyone does answer without referencing, they should definitely say so. I'm all for bragging in this respect!

Personally, I've never looket in the books to find an answer in this room. I consider it more chagenlling without any help, but we are all free to do what we like.

There is already a thread called "Easy questions to answer without looking to a book" which may be used for this objective.

Erm, does anyone know that the woods on the shores of Minhiriath are called the Eryn Vorn without looking it up somewhere? Also, I did spent a great time browsing through all the books, sometimes stopping to read a bit when my eyes catched something interesting, ...
Anyway, here comes something you shouldn't look up in the books...
What were the small downs called right next to the Ephel Duath, in the North of Mordor, starting at the Cirith Ungol?

A mountain range north of Mirkwood. Called the Grey Mountains, they were simply stiff with goblins, hobgoblins, and orcs of the worst description.
